Not getting enough internet speed

Good afternoon;

Considering my mother isn't as good enough with computers and internet as I am, she allowed me to make her forum account for her. We just moved to our new home last Friday (Nov 20), but have had internet/tv/phone since last Wednesday (Nov 18). During the day, our internet speeds are around 1/5 of the speeds we're paying for (up to 100 Mbps). At night however, we get anywhere from 5Mbps to around 40Mbps. I understand the speed we pay for, Premier, is "up to 100Mbps," but if we're getting Preferred, "up to 50Mbps," speeds, we might need to get downgraded.

We had figured with three people using the internet and all of us playing games that require internet access, Premier would be best for us. Sadly, if we're not getting more than Preferred speeds, we shouldn't have to pay for Premier. We don't have the money right now to buy our own modem and router, or else we would.

What could we do, without spending any extra money (because we just moved), to get the speeds we're paying for.

My speed tests:
(only person using internet is me, plugged directly into the modem DPQ3925)

What are your signal levels? To find them, go to 192.168.0.1 in a web browser. Leave the username and password blank and just sign in. Post everything below "Downstream channels" as seen in the picture on page 33 of the manual.

Also, were you plugged in wire for all those tests? Were any other devices faster?

I was plugged directly into the modem for all of the tests. I haven't tested any other laptop yet.

I'm testing my mother's laptop now. Her tests will be CDN2.

So far, it seems to follow the pattern of faster at night and slower during the day. I always thought it'd be the opposite because of people being in school and work during the day (faster) and at home at night (slower).

Hi nhsgrizzly91,

Is this happening with all devices? Please run another speed test using https://www.cox.com/residential/internet/speed-101.html.
Our Cox speed test sites are hosted on our own servers within our network.

Thank you,

I'll run it just for fun at this point. A speed test hosted by an ISP is not really a good speed test, in my opinion. Cox could have a different way of doing things so one would think they have better speeds than they're getting.

And it matches with the speed test I just took (more or less):

Its actually better to do both. The ISP test shows you from modem to Cox's connection to the internet. Other tests show you from Cox's connection and the rest of the internet. The speed you pay for is within Cox's network, so thats where you should test first. If inside Cox is fast, and outside is slow, then you can start comparing tracert and geographical locations.

Looking at the tests, I think it's something going on with the gateway. Something inbetween the modem part and the router part.

We don't have a router. We just have the modem we're renting.

Your renting a DPQ3925, which is a data/phone wireless gateway. A gateway is a modem and router combined. What I was saying is something is wrong with the gateway between the modem and router function of the gateway. Technically of-course, not literally. Maybe it's a firmware issue, or a configuration issue, or a hardware issue. I think you may need a technician to properly isolate.

My apologies, I misunderstood. Cox is already sending somebody out to give us our DVR, so I'll see if my mom could call and see if they could check the gateway.

Thank you for running the speed test. With you obtaining these results wired, I think it'd be best to have a tech look at it. I've added a notation to your current work order.

Thank you,

So I found out from the tech that came out today that there's too many people on the node, but they won't be splitting it until at least the first of next year. Meh. Not that long away honestly.
