Motorola SB6141 questions

I'm considering upgrading my ancient modem to a Motorola SB6141, in order to take advantage of the latest speed increases and perhaps in the future upgrade to the Ultimate Tier.  My questions:

1.  Does this modem work well with an Apple Time Capsule router? I will be connecting the SB6141 to the router via Ethernet.

2.  Will Cox automatically update the firmware to the latest version used on its network? Even if I buy the modem from someone other than Cox?

1. Yes. The SB6141 is a standalone modem with no firewall or routing features. Nothing that would block that router, or any router, from connecting. With that said, there is some basic troubleshooting you need to do when replacing any modem.

First, call Cox with the model number, Serial Number, and Customer MAC address. Then power the modem on and let it go through boot until Cox can see it on their side. Have them check your signal levels and make sure everything in spec. Only then do you connect your router (time capsule).

2. Yes. Excactly how long it takes to update to the latest is a little different from area to area, but usually within 48hr you should be good to go.  The only thing I would be careful with is buying 2nd hand modem. Some of these have firmware that will only run on the ISP it was designed for, so even though Cox updates every modem that connects to it, if the firmware keeps it from connecting in the first place...well you have a paper weight. Its pretty rare, but still common enough to make shopping on Ebay "buyer beware".

This is specifically true for SB6141. The black ones will all be either 2nd hand or stolen. The white ones are retail. So stay away from the black SB6141.

Thanks, yes I plan to buy the modem from a retailer, white model.  It wasn't clear if Cox will only update modems they provide, and I don't want to be locked out from future firmware  updates.

Probably this one?

Good modem, good price. Good to pull the trigger.

Just to follow up, the SB6141 works great.  The Cox speed test reported 30 down/20 up.  Web browsing is very fast.  Great tech support getting it online, which went without a hitch.

Good to hear. I might upgrade myself if/when I get rid of phone. Having to use a D3 phone modem for now. No complaints though.

PS. For anyone reading this thread with a Time capsule I should mention the one thing I had a issue with is Time capsules(or any Apple router) is it doesn't have a web interface or any kind of GUI. You need a specail Mac only utility so the biggest issues I have seen are configuration issues because if you have a Time capsule and no Mac devices, your kind of screwed. Then again if you have no Macs..your probably not buying a time capsule. Heh
