I'm doing an FTP upload. It sometimes works an sometimes it doesn't. It starts out stating it will up load in minutes then slows down to hours. Do I need to upgrade my modem to solve this problem

Can you give the specifics? Where are you trying to FTP to? Your own computer? From where? How big of a file?

I have no idea where the server I'm sending to is located. I'm going from my computer HP Envy Core I7 12 gigs of ram in Wichita, KS. These are photos in zip file. Doesn't matter how big the file. It does it with small files as well as big files.

Well your transfer rate is dependant on where your downloading it from, just like anything. So to answer your question, no, a new modem probably won't help. To tell you what would help I need to know more about the situation. Is the FTP server run by someone you know? Can they connect to it faster then you can? Some FTP servers will specifically cap your download speed from it so it doesn't use up all their bandwidth.

This can be caused by numerous things for how long a upload/download can show taking. Without knowing where the server is located/Ip address we can only generalize what could be going on. You may be seeing the power boost numbers kicking in the first 30 seconds or so of the file while the normal speeds start to kick in. It could be the size of the file not being judged correctly at the beginning by the server or operating system and self corrects, or the speeds dealing with the FTP having to prioritize other connections if the server is the bottleneck as Trikein is eluding to.
You may want to test connecting to another FTP server or seeing if uploading to something else not related to it has the same problem.
