Mini Box to Converter Box to PC Tuner Card

My mini box is connected to my PC tuner card by coax. My PC tuner card does not have HDMI and it was explained to me that coax only displays in 480i which prevents me from changing the video output setting in the mini box to 1080.I saw this converter box at Walmart. If I connect the mini box to the converter through HDMI then connect the PC tuner to the converter through coax, will this allow me to change the video output setting? http://www.walmart.com/ip/HomeWorx-HW180STB-HDTV-1080p-Digital-Converter-Box-with-Media-Player-Function-Dolby-Digital-and-HDMI-Out/40175088#about Thanks

No, you need a box that takes an HDMI *input* and outputs composite/coax.  My experience with these type of boxes is that the output is fairly low resolution and clipped.

The hdmi port in the Walmart box is output only, not input.  You can't connect the minibox hdmi to the Walmart box hdmi ... that's connecting output to output.  That box takes an over-the-air digital signal (ATSC) on the coax input port and converts it to analog (coax and composite (yellow/red/white) out) and hdmi digital out.  It only works with OTA signals, cable uses QAM not ATSC and the QAM is now encrypted.

A suggestion, replace your PC tuner card with something like the HDHomeRun Prime.  It uses a cable card (trade your minibox in for a cable card, same price) and runs directly off the cable.  No need for an external box.  It will set you back about $120-130 but do what you want.

Hi SouthOCBoy,

Replacing the PC tuner card with a device that uses a CableCARD may be your best bet. I'm not sure that a converter box will provide video output of a quality worth watching.
