Is it not possible to extend a recording in progress with Contour?

So if a football game goes way longer than you expected, you're stuck - there's no way to tack on more time?

HokieDave,

You can extent the recording by going into Scheduled Recordings and selecting the title. You will have the option to Edit Recording Options and extend the end time.

Is there something more you have to do for that to work?

On my DVR, when I do that, "Edit Record Options" is greyed out and it says "This function is currently unavailable".  I have tried it both for manual recordings and for previously scheduled recordings.

Hmm, I too am confused to hear a COX worker say it's possible because I encountered the same issue last night. I was watching a football game (recorded it so I could start after I finished making dinner without missing anything) & knew it was going to go past the scheduled end time. Luckily I was able to catch up (FF-ing through anything that wasn't a live-play) but I thought that was very odd (though I've found a lot of feature on the old-DVR/box seem to be gone).  Just like Dave's, mine is greyed out, saying it's unavailable.

Yep, football is the main issue for me too.  Obnoxiously, most of the college football broadcasts are advertised as 3 hours with a half hour of "college gameday live" or something afterwards ... even though unless it's Navy vs Georgia Tech and they run every single down in a game where the clock never stops, it's going to be well over 3 hours.

So if I forget to extend it, I'm going to miss most of the fourth quarter.  And if I don't extend it enough and then it turns out to be a record-breaking 8OT game,  then there's no way to fix it once the game starts.

StephanieA, can you take a look and follow up?  If this is possible, how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

I double checked with our Video Team and extending the recording time during the recording isn't an option at this time. One solution would be to stop the recording during a break and starting a new one. With the new recording, you can extend it. I hope this helps.

Program a manual recording. Have it start where you programmed your football game to end.

Yep, or just go to the program guide and normally record the next show following the football game, whatever it is. Then you just have to select and begin watching that second recording once the original recording ends.

Stephanie, can you check with the Video Team to see if they are working on other similar functionality gaps for DVR recording between Trio/Contour and the Passport/Rovi software.

For example, Passport/Rovi will prompt you with an OFFER to extend the recording time when it sees that you have set a Live Sporting Event to be recorded. That is SMART and customers appreciate it. No excuse why the more powerful hardware/software cannot offer these basic DVR features.

Please post a list of the items the Video Team are working on so that we can reference that list going forward. Transparency is appreciated by your paying customers. Please do not develop this software in the shadows.

I've forwarded this option to our Video Team for review. Different members of the team work on different projects so I won't be able to give specific names. You can sign up for update notifications so you know what features are added after an update. Here's a link to get you started. You don't have to use an @cox.net email address to get the emails.

Perhaps your programmers should talk to the folks over at Comcast who implemented a fix to a similar problem within days of the initial X1 platform release. Seriously, your team really ought to look at the X1 platform. By comparison Contour is so lacking in obvious features. (I've compiling a list - it's over 25 items already.) As of now, I'm very unhappy I moved to an area where your service was my only choice.

So, if a hockey match goes into 1, and then a second overtime, the X1 DVR by itself adds extra time to the recording? How does it know it's an overtime, and not a highlight show? I think your use of the word similar is the key. Exactly what problem was corrected?

And please post your list of 25 problems with the Contour guide to the Contour sticky thread at the beginning of this forum.

Nobody expects it to automatically detect that the game has gone over and automatically extend the recording time.  That would be really cool, but as far as I know, that isn't currently possible at all.  Again, that's NOT what we're talking about.

We're talking about a game that you're sitting there watching and you know it's going passed the allotted time and so you want to extend that time.  Or you have an "oops" moment and you realize after the game starts that you forgot to tack extra time onto it.

This is also an issue with non-sports.  For example, CBS usually delays the start of their Sunday evening entertainment programs because football (or during the offseason, golf) goes over the allotted time.  So if you're a fan of the Mentalist, which has an advertised start time of 10:00 and you start watching it at 10:15 so you can skip through the commercials, it's too late to extend the time then.

Again, we're NOT talking about any kind of automatic tacking time on - we're talking about giving the user the ability to manually extend the recording.

Already answered. This is easy. Just schedule a recording in the time slot following the one you previously recorded (that you feel will be short), or do a manual recording for whatever time you need (starting at the time your "short" recording is scheduled to end.)

Plan ahead and add an hour or two on the end of the evening's recording by selecting the succeeding programs.

The options for a extending a active program are known by our development team as a issue/feature. To this point it is not a noted fix for the next update this coming month, but is a issue being looked into for future updates.
