I would like to record short clips of sports plays whether it be a recorded game or a game I'm watching. I find myself showing my son these plays again if he is in the house ... via DVR rewind. I don't have a current DVR box. It is an Explorer 8300HD. I just dont see how the options via the Record button help me accomplish this.

What remote do you use? Should be a 30second rewind. Or maybe its 10 seconds? Will be a arrow slightly curved in a circle. See picture link above. This will rewind the game 30second, either playing what you have recorded, or of the cache the DVR keeps even when not recording, as long as you have been watching that channel atleast 30 seconds. What I will sometimes even do is use the first DVR tuner to record the game in SD and then watch it in HD. I get to archive it without taking up so much space, and I start the SD recording 2min before the HD. So I can use 30second button for instant replays, and the swap button for 2min+ reply, since I can rewind/FF the SD channel without effecting the HD streaming being recorded live. I usually go over plays on the SD channel when the HD goes to commercial, and visa versa. Also don't forget the Cox Sports Channel thing which shows like 6 sports channel at same time. Not useful for watching, but very handy to know what team/station is in commercial break.
If you watch a LOT of sports and in record in HD, might want to think about upgrading to Contour 6 tuner box. Much bigger HD, 6 tuners (record 5 things and watch 1 live and watch 1 thing recorded, 7 things, all at same time) Which if you set to the channels the Cox Sports PIP thing does, you get a very nice effect.

Yes, I have that button (I'm not at home now) so without trying it, I'm assuming that does not allow recording of that short rewind duration, right? I want to record these clips so I can show my son later. Then, I don't have to FFWD (looking for the start position) to show in a fully recorded game.
Thanks for the other suggestions though.

Is it just the 8300HD box that doesn't? Are there other newer boxes that do? I ask because I'm sure after all these years it is time for me to upgrade.

How about recording a portion of the DVR-cached playback? I just want to Start Recording, starting literally then, not in the past and later manually Stop.

The same would apply in this situation as well. The DVR was designed to record programs in their entirety. A solution may exist to accomplish this however I don't think the DVR is going to be it.
