High Ping and High Latency issues from Alexandria, VA

Does the latency only occur when playing games online?  Do you have the server IP address?  I would like to have you run a trace route to the server address, that would help us pinpoint where the problem.  Are you using a wireless connection or do you plug in using an ethernet cable?

The latency and high ping occur both when playing the online game and when using Skype or Microsoft Lync. The main game that I play is League of Legends from Riot Games. They use a wide range of addresses for their game servers (hosted in Southern California) but some typical test IPs for Riot are 64.7.194.68 or 66.150.148.66 or 216.133.234.96. I have been running tracert throughout the day to see if I can pinpoint any issues as well. I use the Google Public DNS. The local Cox traffic seems to flow very smoothly (usually less than 30 ms), but things tend to slow down once they go to the first non-Cox hop. This is usually Cogent, Level3, and sometimes Hostdime. All three are greater than 100ms on a regular basis. The next major speedbump always occurs in Cogents LA servers. They also always ping over 100m (usually >200). I did notice a major issue when tracing to Google.com where ip68-100-2-201.dc.dc.cox.net (68.100.2.201) and ip68-100-2-201 (68.100.2.73) both responding over 2,000ms. However, I can say that this issue with the Cox DC servers is very rare.

Feel free to post some of the trace routes you're looking at and we'll take a look to see if anything looks out of place.

From the results posted it appears the problem is definitely occurring somewhere on the destination provider's network.  Have contacted the support for the game host yet to ask them to troubleshoot this with their provider?
