email to my cox.net account is bouncing

I have had three people over the past month spontaneously tell me that email they tried to send to my cox.net email was bouncing. The error message is "cox.net not responding". I don't know how many mails I've actually missed...it hasn't happened in my own tests. But clearly something has gone wrong recently with the cox.net mail servers since I've had this account for ten years previously without a single report of this kind.

I have had this same problem for 6 weeks and have been complaining for over a month.   The problem is unresolved.  The last tech guy I talked to said they plan to replace the email servers "sometime after Labor Day".   I don't know if I have that much patience.

Are you having the mail actually bounce or just for the sender to receive an error message? I seem to be seeing a mixture of both because in some cases I know I have received the mail.

I have received snail mail from financial companies saying their emails with my statements bounced.   I have tested from my work email account and gotten the "invalid account" error message.   I think some sending email servers are more patient and will re-try after a period of time.  Those might get through because it seems to be an intermittent problem at Cox.   From what I can tell there is nothing we can do but wait or switch services.  Talking to tech support is aggravating and produces zero results for me.  But please call because otherwise they think there is no problem.

Hi Kbok and Wmnwmn,

Please don't think that we are ignoring you or pretending that a problem does not exist. We are aware of the issues with WebMail. We're in the process of replacing our WeMail servers to relieve the latency issue that some folks are experiencing, and mail "bounce" errors should occur less frequently.

If my car is not starting 30% of the time and I everytime I take it to the dealer he first walks me through lengthy instructions on how to start my car and then when I finally demonstrate it doesn't start he tells me he has never heard of anyone having that problem and there is nothing he can do but wait 2-6 months for a possible solution, I would call that denying and ignoring the problem.

I just spent some time to set up a test from my work email where I will measure exactly how many mails are getting through in a day by sending a test mail every 30 minutes, the script also sends a copy to another account just to verify it is getting out.  Why can't a tech expert at Cox do that??? So far Cox is Oh-for-two.

Here are the results so far, after 10 messages sent.   7 returned with "invalid recepient" from either mx.east.cox.net or mx.west.cox.net and 3 made it through.    So in my analogy I had it backwards: 70% failure rate.   The mail system is completely broken for me, it is not just a slow WebMail system...

The returned mails:

"/var/spool/mail/XXXXXX": 7 messages
>   1 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 10:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
2 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 10:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"

After midnight the stats got much better, not sure if Cox finally fixed my account after 1 month of complaining, but here is the final tally after 24 hours:

>   1 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 10:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
2 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 10:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
3 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 11:45  83/2760  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
4 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 12:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
5 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 13:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
6 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 13:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
7 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 14:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
8 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 15:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
9 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 16:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
10 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 17:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
11 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 18:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
12 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 20:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
13 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 21:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
14 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 23:15  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"
15 Mail Delivery System  Tue Jul 14 23:45  81/2749  "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender"

Total 48 messages sent, 15 returned to sender,   31% failure rate.

Before midnight: 27 messages sent, 15 returned to sender. 55% failure rate.

After midnight:  21 messages sent, 0 returned to sender.

I will continue the test for another couple days at an hourly interval because  in the past I found that often it would work for a day or so, and then begin failing again.

It sounds like you're having a more consistent problem than me. I guess I'm just going to see what happens over the next weeks. I would hope that cox realizes that reliability of email is absolutely critical in this day and age. I have business clients sending me things and they're not going to contact me any other way.
