I think the USB ports on the DVR are inactive, but what is the ethernet port used for? Is there a benefit to connecting the DVR to the internet?

No. All recievers are made for providers of different types. Some providers use Ethernet instead of coaxial. Cox doesn't use Ethernet though, so they aren't active.

is was thought when the dvr first came out it would allow for internet access via the built in cable modem in the dvr
