Download with very low average bitrate

I have a situation where my average download speed is around 200-300 kbps any time of the day. The slowdown is characterized by multi-second pauses in the bit stream, frequently timing out during a page load requiring a reload. Needless to say, any video is hopeless. Looking for a fix for this otherwise I'll look for another broadband supplier.

Any help is appreciated (esp Cox tech help).

I have a Linksys WCG200 modem with downstream power = -9.6 dBmv, SNR=32.0 dB, upstream power = 43.0 dBmV.

This poor download performance has been in effect for a month or two with acceptable performance before then.

Here are the stats and graphs for ten second burst and three minute tests via test.lvcm.com.

Ok, my modem/router equipment was an ancient Linksys WCG200 V1 which is DOCSIS 1.0.

I replaced it with the Motorola SB6121 DOCSIS 3 modem and problem is no more. I get a solid 5+ Mbps on my Cox 4 Mbps subscription.
Many thanks for the comments and advice.

Dave

Hi CrazyBoris,

I can take a look at the signal levels of the modem to see if there any issues that would cause you to have those download speeds.  Are you using a wireless connection or plugged in directly?  If you are able to connect directly, I am curious if the speed is faster because it could be an issue with the wireless. Please email us at coxhelp@cox.com including the account information (name and address), we will figure out what is causing the problem.

First thing I notice is a low DS SNR. That should be above 35, and with a downstream that is technically within spec makes me think it's a intermident noise issue. Seems to be effecting download more, so I think its ingress somewhere in the DS frequency range. That ingress could be coming from your house though, so this doesn't rule out a internal issue.

Pretty sure WCG200v1 is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. If your DS SNR is still 32 your probably still going to have problems. Fingers crossed though.

The admin page for this modem reported DOCSIS 1.0. It's really old, maybe that's the reason. The good news is the SB6121 reports 35-37 SNR. Hoping for the best.

Thx,

Dave
