Did McAfee monkey with TCPIP or Client settings?

Had trouble with McAfee a few days ago. I finally downloaded McAfee Virtual Technician, which found: Expected File not Present      c:\program files\mcafee\virusscan\mcvsoutil.dll

I did an on-line Chat with Dileesh Das. Then phone call with Zack in Louisiana to remove completely then re-install the new McAfee to fix it. It was OK or so I thought. Worked OK all day. Then re-boot (over night) and presto, NO INTERNET !

Since then, I found that either the NIC is zapped or McAfee changed some SETTINGS like under Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connections, Properties. Maybe TCPIP, or Client for MS Networks.

I called Cox, and was on hold a long time. An hour later I got hung up. Called back. I'm still on hold. So has this happened to anyone else?

Just an update.... after being on hold for an hour, I got a lady, Tiara, who put me BACK in queue. 45 MORE minutes on hold and this time I got Zane, who was NOT willing to help me troubleshoot this problem, saying that he had no training (on TCP-IP). I asked Zane again, "I've got this computer that doesn't connect to the internet. Can't you help me?"

So there you go folks, Phone support, doesn't. Unbelievably poor support STRUCTURE.

I'm not sure which phone number you called however I do apologize for any inconvenience.  Our security software team has a dedicated support phone number 888-556-0959.  They would be in the best position to offer any assistance with the McAfee product offered through us.

Well thanks for the support number (888-556-0959). And, yes, that's the number I called.

The problem is now corrected, with no thanks to Cox. I took care of it myself. It was an easy fix too. If I had talked with a competent support team it would have been fixed in just a few minutes instead of hours.

I still can't believe that guy didn't seem to know about Client for Microsoft Networks or IP addressing. Had he never configured a firewall or set Bindings in NetBEUI? I guess all he knew was the script on McAfee, and there was no scripting to pass me up the chain to someone who knew more.

You know what NetBEAUI is and still using Mcafee? Try Avast. Free, smaller memory footprint and better detection rate. Microsoft Security essentials is also decent I hear, but I don't have any personal experience using it.

Had noticed that for some reason McAfee had somehow turned off 'Real Time Scanning' and then I couldn't get it to turn back on after several tries, so uninstalled, then reinstalled McAfee, which took care of the 'Real Time Scanning' issue....and everything seemed to work....for one evening. I shut the PC down in the AM and when I turned the PC back on when I got home from work.....now I cannot connect to IE! Really irritated with McAfee AND Cox! (And BTW, I agree, Cox is pretty much clueless when it comes to helping with issues. Went thru 2 people there, w/ no such luck, and they just want to bat you over to McAfee, then McAfee bats you right back to Cox support. NOT HAPPY RIGHT NOW.)

(Update 3/28/14: Uninstalled McAfee once again, and suddenly IE was up and running and connected to the internet w/o any problem. I now have Avast and Firefox, and they are quite the happy couple. What an amazing difference. No more McAweful for me.)

I can understand how getting support can sometimes be confusing.  We have a dedicated McAfee support team that can be reached by calling 888-556-0959 however they aren't equipped to help with general Internet connectivity issues.  For a problem of this nature I would recommend trying to access the Internet with a different device on your home Internet connection first to ensure that is working ok.
