Data meter innacurate

Hi

Here's my case. 2 months ago i switched from att 20mbp(250gb data cap) to cox 50mps(350gb cap). On att my average monthly usage was about 180gb.

Now first month on cox i have reached 300gb. 5 days into the second cycle and i have already 172gb used.

I called in, upgraded to 100mps(700gb cap), the meter graph for the past few days shows an average of 27gb used per day.

I turned off my wifi from the router, so that i know nobody is using my WiFi, i loaded networx on my 3 pc's(to monitor my bandwidth on the pcs), and i'm streaming 720p on 2 fire tv for lets say 5 hrs a day each just to be sure(most likely 3 hrs). thats all i had for that day. Second day i checked the meter graph, it showed 26gb used for the day before. my bandwidth monitoring software shows 1gb for pc# 1, 1gb for pc# 2 and 600mb for pc# 3. So my hard wired fire tv streaming boxes chewed up the rest of 23.4 gb in a day... That is nuts!! I use Kodi(for whoever's familiar with) and i set a bandwidth limitation to 7000kbps. At that rate it is impossible to reach that level of usage

So i called in again just to realize the tech guy tells me my network is full of viruses and their meter is accurate. "let me reemphasize for you mr .... our meter is accurate. You still have 400gb in the cycle...". Lots of questions with "give me a moment to check into that", and then an off the topic answer....   I hung up, called in again, told them i would switch back to 250gb data cap with 175gb accurate usage if nobody fixes anything. Apparently somebody will now investigate further and call me back within 72hrs.

My setup has been the same the whole time, no downloading, no bittorenting, no peer to peer seeding. I am clean. 3 pc's, one for parents, 2 for kids.

It is so revolting and it sounds like such a scam to reach an average 25 gb per day data usage.

To have to upgrade the speed to meet the data cap? I would've been fine at 30 mbps.... It is plenty speed for streaming on 2-3 devices at once. Now I'm paying for 100mbps and customer service is not helpful to say the least...

A few more days and i will  keep you posted on my decision of switching or staying...

I wrote this in the hope somebody honest reads it that can make a fair decision to help people that can not bring  arguments to their favor when they are overcharged like this... Lets say a 50 year old person with no computer understanding runs in this problem... Then what? COX makes a little more money and poor customer takes the loss? And if there's more of you in my shoes I would suggest leave a post... Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem... Very disappointing after just 2 months into it

I am aware of the auditing company

I had numerous conversations with customer service, a ticket number (KSR000002957440).

I believe by this point this is escalated. I'm waiting for a call back within the next 48 hrs...

How come a technician is not already assigned to investigate my home network? Isn't that part of customer care? What if the installation process(that i payed a separate fee) is causing the problem? this router/modem(sbg6782) is not compatible with bandwidth monitoring 3rd party software available. Are you suggesting i should spend some extra 200$ to prove my point?

If this problem is not fixed soon i'll switch back. I'm 2 months into this deal with already a bad taste.

My life does not revolve around my COX account

@Radu Zaharia

Any questions concerning usage on the home network we would need to defer to the customer on.  We can provide general tips on things to look for however we don't have the ability to investigate issues concerning specific devices.  If your router has a data usage tool of it's own you can enable it and see how the results compare.

Have you read any of the previous discussions? "we don't have the ability"? "we have tips for you".... thank you so much! so useful

Do you have $200 for a compatible router so i can install the  software and make customer  care happy? Or that should be my present to you

I'll post a tip for you ChrisL once i make a decision

after all the people you respond to on the forum that complain about the same matter, you're still insisting data meter is accurate?

install new compatible modems, buy software?

i went through the data usage topics! how is it that i found multiple deleted posts with no reply?

im curious how long mine will last
