Cox Planning to Impose Overage Fees

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Exclusive-Cox-Testing-Usage-Overage-Fees-in-Cleveland-133775

DSLReports has received information confirming that Cox Communications will be testing overage fees this summer ahead of a potential nationwide deployment. A Cox insider familiar with the cable operator's network management practices says that customers in the company's Cleveland, Ohio market will be informed on May 19 that they'll soon be facing overage fees of $10 for every 50 GB over their usage cap they travel.

From June to September, Cox customers in Cleveland will have their "overage" usage tallied on their bills, but users initially won't be charged. Instead, they'll see the estimated overage fee and an accompanying credit. They'll face the real charges starting in October, according to the insider.

A draft customer support script obtained exclusively by DSLReports states that this lead-in period will "give customers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their typical data usage and take action, such as secure their WiFi network or change service plans, if they exceed their limit."

The script also notes that customers will be notified via e-mail and a browser popup when they've reached 85% and 100% of their monthly data allotments. Cox services like Cox TV Connect, Cox Digital Telephone and Cox Home Security will not count toward the usage cap, a Cox insider claims.

This is the reason I hated Comcast, there is no longer any point in bandwidth caps for cable HSI service.

While I do not feel I will be affected as I have never gone over 300GB/mo and now I have 700GB/mo,  This topic needs more attention.  If Cox really does intend to start charging overage fees, there needs to be more push back.

The vast majority probably never come close to their limit, which leaves a very large amount of bandwidth for those that do.

I don't think I'll ever hit the new 2 TB cap with Ultimate either, but people do need to know about this.

What I do not understand is why my wireless modems data meter and cox's do not agree on what I am using. The difference is so enormous it is comical. For example, June 12, my internal data meter said I used a total of 393 MBs while Cos is claiming 5.5 GBs. I would guess Cox will claim that mine is under and their is accurate but my feeling are the truth is not that simple since their meter is not directly connect to my wireless modem. I don't object to being charged for what I use, but I would like know which meter is making a more accurate reading. The cox meter show very large difference in the amount of usage day to day that make little sense. For example, on May 17th it showed me using a whopping 16.7 GBs setting a new high for daily usage for me while my meter show it to be a rather low usage day for me (128 MBs). I think if they are going to charge for overages, they better make sure their meters are working accurately and properly.

Hi ELW,

That seems to be a big difference between what you see on your personal meter and ours.  We can investigate this further to see what's going on.  Please email us at cox.help@cox.com, include the name and address listed on the account.  -Derrick

THis has been threatened before and failed when Cox realized that they would have to triple their support staff to handle the failed communications and page loads. They have no mechanism in place to measure that.

This post actually brought me back to these forums. Thank you for posting so everyone is made aware and can discuss. Its a substantial departure from how Cox usually handles these kind of things.
