Cox is now blocking/dumping forwarded emails

Dear Cox. I have my personal email address that I've used for decades. It is simply forwarded to my cox.net address by dns provider (directnic.com). I then retrieve my emails from cox servers. Worked till yesterday. (In the past, however, I've had enormous trouble with cox spam filters tagging my outgoing emails sent from a non-cox return address as spam. I still do after 7 pages of discussion on this very forum listening to cox techies pointing fingers on others.)

But as of yesterday even simple forwarded emails all started disappearing.

According to directnic.com since today ALL of their clients with COX addresses started seeing their forwarders go dead. No bounce message, nothing, but all forwarded emails to cox addresses just go into oblivion. For ALL directnic clients email forwarding with cox addresses, not just me. For other providers directnic forwarding still works just fine. They don't know what the problem with cox is now.

Called cox and of course finger pointing is the name of the game. So please cox, what did you do this time? What did you do this time? Please what did you do this time?

Can directnic.com provide any headers from the forwarded email?

Also, can you send a email from your domain to your Cox.net address? If not, do you get any bounce backs? If not, can you include the headers from that test email?

Last, what is the domain. Their SMTP servers might be blacklisted somewhere, causing Cox to firewall the domain.

To add. Just set up a new ms outlook email account. Also set up an additional forwarding rule for my primary email address (at directnic) to go to this new outlook email. Tested - my email was forwarded by directnic to outlook and was received there no problem - but the forwarding to COX's again vanished into nothingness. So it means directnic's forwarding works fine. It also means that Cox is now doing something to block/dump forwarding from other addresses.

Why would you do that, Cox???

Just found a thread on this forum from Dec. 9 claiming that his forwarding from Gmail also started getting dumped by Cox. Anyone else can come forward with similar problem?

Yes, email sent to cox.net address goes through. It's forwarding that is being dumped. Domain is goldstarweb.com, not blacklisted anywhere as far as I can tell. Directnic ips are unlikely blacklisted either (just forwarded to outlook, see my other post)

This is a gmail support article, but I assume it applies to anyone forwarding from one domain to another. Could it be relevant? We can tell more about what is going on, but need to see the email headers.

"We recommend that you do not change the envelope sender when forwarding email to Gmail. Sometimes, when forwarding email, the envelope sender gets changed to your domain. When this happens, Gmail may learn that your domain is sending spam, and will treat other emails from this domain as spam as well.

Alternatively, changing the envelope sender is ok if you do one of the following:

  • Put "SPAM" in the subject
  • OR discard any spam emails and not forward them to Gmail at all.

SpamAssassin is a free spam filter that can be used for identifying spam outside of Gmail, and putting "SPAM" in the subject.

Authentication

  • Do not modify, remove or shuffle message headers or modify the body of the message. DKIM or DomainKeys signatures will break if the body is altered, and all authentication information will be lost.
  • Common DKIM breakages include modifying the mime boundaries, anti-virus or anti-spam programs modifying the body of the message, expanding the message recipient using LDAP, and re-encoding the message.
  • Several highly-phished domains have asked Gmail to enforce strict authentication checks on their mail. These domains include eBay, Paypal, and Google. If your mail server modifies the forwarded messages from these domains, these messages will be marked as phishing.
  • One symptom of this problem is that a messages from these domains forwarded through your mail server to Gmail will have an Authentication-Results header that show that DKIM did not pass, while messages sent directly to Gmail will have a passing signature.

Sorry, I fail to see relevance of this gmail article to the case at hand. I have no mail service from directnic, only email forwarding to my cox address. No headers to show you. And Directnic forwards fine, as I tested with new outlook account, but just not to Cox address anymore. Directnic likely forwards to Cox, but then the email goes into oblivion before or when or after it reaches Cox service. Just started happening.

1. Directnic claims ALL their clients with COX addresses just started seeing their forwarding fail, whereas their forwarding to all other email addresses works fine.

2. I confirmed #1 point myself with test forwarding thru Directnic to outlook email address.

3. Dec. 9 post on this very forum reports that his forwarding from Gmail to Cox address no longer worked all of sudden.

How many more clues does one need to begin suspecting Cox's recent "foul play" in the causation of this issue? Pointing fingers on others is pointless. But if this problem is not fixed, Cox is de facto denying me mail service. Am I not paying enough?

I wasn't pointing fingers. I was trying to see what was causing it and that was the first thing that I ran across. Sorry, out of ideas. Good luck.

Tecknowhelp,

I do appreciate you trying to help. My true frustration is with Cox the so-called "techsupport" people who simply don't seem to care at all. Just 6 months ago, I was trying to figure out why Cox spam filter suddenly began blocking my outgoing legit emails. The thread is here:

http://forums.cox.com/forum_home/internet_forum/f/5/t/7752.aspx

Although few folks shared ideas on the mentioned thread, NONE of the Cox techsupport people even responded to my opened ticket, numerous calls, etc. With all clues suggesting that the Cox's delirious spam filter caused the issue, their official "techsupport" totally ignored me back then. Totally. Problem was never fixed. I learned to live with it.

And now this - I can no longer receive any of my forwarded emails since 2 days ago. And again, all clues point to Cox, but I suspect Cox will ignore me here too. Monopoly is a wonderful thing for a holder, isn't it?

Well, I am beginning to think that I just unwittingly joined a comedy club. To be fair, I have to report that I was not ignored and received today 2 responses from Cox techsupport. The first in the morning, the guy writes: “I understand you would like to know about your account information.” Say what?

The second response, a different guy says, “there was no problems with the Cox servers or e-mail service … we suggest you to try to use Enhanced Webmail … Cox does not provide support for e-mail clients software or e-mail in mobile devices”

Ok, I may admit, my English must be terribly incoherent. But please, dear Cox, let me try this again:

Email forwarding from other addresses to Cox addresses appears to be blocked/dumped by Cox since Dec 9, 2015. That is the problem. Your technicians ought to fix it because all clues point out to Cox’s end.

Now, if the next response I get from Cox advising me how to repair my toilet (perhaps it’s my toilet that causes my email forwarding to fail, who knows, LOL) I think I would go commit myself to a mental institution.

Cheers.. And my email forwarding still does not work…

Can you explain exactly how the forwarding works? You said you don't have email hosting with your domain provider, is the forwarding done as the DNS level? Who is the email provider for the domain? From what server exactly is the email hit Cox's server?

I can forward my gmail account to my cox.net address and that works. So Cox's server is excepted forwarded email, why not this particular domain. I wouldn't be surprised if Cox's firewall a domain if they saw spam somewhere on the same registrar. Without data, all you can do is finger point.

Of course it's possible Cox started firewalling something between Directnic server and Cox server. It's quite likely actually. Directnic only does my email forwarding to cox.net address at dns level. And if this is the case, wouldn't it be Cox responsibility to investigate/trace and tell me what exactly they are firewalling?

I had dsl service from ATT for 12 years before Cox. Their customer service was horrendous, like you had to wait on hold for an hour every time. However, I can't recall any technical issues with ATT that I was unable to resolve. And never had so much trouble with my email as I've been having with Cox. And about Cox's techsupport? My Gosh, I think I have a better chance to get response/help from a pile of bricks than Cox's support. What we observe here is Cox firewalling their own paying customers, literally.

I will get in touch with Directnic network admin on Monday and request them to trace email forwarded to cox.net. They say only forwarding to Cox is affected, and none others. (And I also tested forwarding via Directnic to outlook address). But even if Directnic finds some Cox's email blockage, I doubt Cox is going to fix anything.

Can't trust Cox, they are hurting my business more and more with this insanity. At the same time, they are never late to send their bill. Anyone can recommend decent pop service? Thanks in advance.

Problem solved -- at least for a time being. No thanks to you, the non-existent Cox tech support. But I do miss that toilet repair education that Cox techies didn't get a chance to make me try. And I bet it was coming... Cheers...

I don't think you're crazy. For a couple of days now, I've been trying to figure out why in the *** my webmail mail filter is not conditionally forwarding mail to my cell. I have a webmail filter set up to take any mail that comes FROM craigslist OR is going TO craigslist and FORWARD a copy of it to my cell phone email address (blahblah@tmomail.net). This is great because I get instant notification if someone is responding to me about something I'm selling, without me having to initially expose my cell phone on craigslist. This has been working for years and just recently broke. So, off to the troubleshooting I go (I do techy stuff for a living). Setup the same existing filter to search for anything coming from gmail as well and forward. Send an email directly to my @cox.net and BAM, email is forwarded as expected. K... Send an email from gmail to @cox.net and this time include a bogus to: in addition to my cox.net - where the bogus to: is like fredfred@craigslist... Email goes to cox, reflects @craigslist in the recipients.... NOTHING gets forwarded. WTF. Configured the forward to go to gmail instead, still no successful forwards - so its not cell carrier blocking the forwards. Instead, it appears I've pissed cox off (with my filter doing several forwards a month - cuz I don't sell much on CL) and they have added me to a list that prevents any forwarding based on craigslist as a first catch filter. In other words, if I have craigslist anywhere in the To (by sending from another email system to cox and copying craigslist) or if it shows up in the From (like when you just finished posting something and get an acknowledgment), craigslist is triggered on the filter and the filter forward action doesn't happen. I change the filter action to stick the email in a folder, and it does THAT just fine. Cox email **, why do I stick with it? Cuz I can't bare to change all my other places that are pointing to it. Cox is systematically breaking forwarding systems...

@wizardberry

One suggestion I might make with your message rules is to see if you can make the rule based on the sender's email address and see if that makes any difference.
