We added phone service back to our account about 3 weeks ago and purchased a new phone combo pack, 1 corded and 1 cordless. We have barely used the phone at all since. As soon as you lift the handset or press talk the sound is clear, then within 3 seconds, STATIC. We have tried all outlets, new phone cables and we even tried it out with our old phone/fax/printer unit from the 1990's. We have tried all different phone settings and still no good. Our children cannot use it to leave voicemails because we cant hear anything but garbled voices! It is happening on incoming and outgoing calls. I tried to make an important call last night and after 3 bad connections I switched to the trusty iphone. This is a newer home and the wiring was checked when the tech restarted service.

If you're hearing static that would indicate a problem with the analog portion of the phone connection which would be anything between the modem and the phones. Can you try connecting a phone directly to the tel1 port on the modem and see if you have the same problem?

Yes that helped. Now what? It's only been 3 weeks or so since install. The production date on the modem is 08/11. Maybe it's a refurbished unit?

If connecting a phone directly to the modem corrects the problem this would suggest there is an inside wiring issue if you had the modem connected to a wall jack then the problem was occurring. If you need assistance with that we would be able to send a technician to troubleshoot. If you're not enrolled in our Cox Service Protection Plan however there would be a $60 fee for the visit. You could also try disconnecting all devices from all phone jacks in your home, connecting one of them to the tel1 jack on the modem, then try connecting your phone devices one by one to see if there is a pattern to when the problem starts.

The modem is plugged into the wall outlet. It and the corded phone are the only devices using an outlet. My wife said the installer already checked the wiring outside and installed the modem where it is now. However, I cannot verify this because she said she never saw him do it and I was not there. We tried all accessible outlets yesterday and intermittent static was heard at all sites.

Static doesn't occur on digital lines and the service is digital all the way from us to the modem. That being the case the best place to look for static would be on the inside phone wiring. There may be interference coming from something or perhaps a wire is crossed somewhere.

Tech is coming out. COX phone support rep tested the modem and found a "short". Thanks to all!
