So just today, i received an email from Cox about my data usage exceeding the data plan. The email states my data plan includes 300 GB, where for this month, my house has used 605 GB, more than doubling our data plan. Lately, our internet has been having problems where the wifi would just crash and a simple restart would fix it. An hour later, the same problem would reoccur and I'm not sure if it is because I am using an old modem or because my house is using too much data. I am living with 8 other people, so 9 people total including myself. 6 out of the 9 people regularly game on either a desktop or laptop computer. We're just college students and upgrading our bundle for better internet is just way too much for our budget since we have a tv and internet bundle deal: $139.99/mo. The upgrade is $189.99/mo. Please help. I don't want Cox to terminate our service since the internet is so vital to our schoolwork and our future.

Yeah, I have a Cisco modem and a Netgear router. I'm not sure how old these are as they've just been passed down from a friend to a friend.

What kind of Netgear router? Most have a "Netgear Genie" application that allows you to monitor bandwidth use.
Also, I doubt playing online took up 600GB, but downloading games will. Maybe if your all playing the same game and downloading it, download it once to a DVD and pass it around?

It just says Netgear and WPS on the router, not sure how to determine what kind of router I have

There should be a sticker on it somewhere with the model number. For example, this is a WNDR4000

First to log into the router, go to http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com.
When prompted, enter admin for the router user name and password for the router password,
both in lowercase letters.
Select no if it prompts you to do a firmware upgrade. That should be done seperatly. Also select "No I want to configure the router myself" if this is the first time signing into the router.
Then on left side of screen, click on Advanced > Traffic Meter which should look like this.
Enable the traffic meter if not done so already and apply the changes. Then it will track your data usage and you can even set up warnings when you get near your cap.
You may also be able to monitor traffic via the "Net Genie" app. See page 15 of this manual on that.

Dear Kdizzle,
If you have 9 people on your network(Gamers and most likely streamers/bit torrenters) Do the math. You have 33 GB's per user. Even a user that casually browses reddit on their Mobile will eat up the average Data allotment you have to work with and most likely triple that amount. Include mass OS updates, driver updates, downloading games from Steam, Netflix, Pirate Bay and FTP for homework of course.
Upgrade your Speed which will give you a higher allotment of Data usage. Plead for a discount and hope the CSR gives it to you. However 600 GB's is still 600 GB's of data usage. 9 people x's 1 PC/Mac each + 9 Mobiles= Your not going to have a good time if you keep breaking Cox's AUP.

Good points. Do you think the new 1Gbps service to roll out 1st part of 2015 will include a unlimited cap?
