Morning!
A while back I upgraded from Preferred to Premiere service, had issues with only maxing out at 20-ish mbps download/upload speeds, posted to this forum and had it fixed.
I've started having the problem again recently, especially when signing on via my work laptop. It makes downloading anything near impossible (including just loading the speed check page - I tried twice last Friday and couldn't get the page to finish loading at all at first, then suddenly it finished and said I had 60 mbps speeds).
I just completed a test and, true enough, back to the 20-ish mbps (though I do suddenly get spurts of better service). What else can be done? I don't know if it's just poor service or the modem but it's getting pretty frustrating.
Thanks,
Nicole G.

First, what kind of modem do you have?
Also, when your doing the speed tests, is it wired or wireless?

You might want to read my post below. I had Premier and never got more than 1GB/s -- 10KB to 250MB was typical., I downgraded to Preferred and the only rate change I saw was the rate on my monthly bill.
IMHO, we Cox customer will never see the advertised speeds. I think they use some measurement trick like the EPA mileage on cars -- perfectly accurate according to some engineering standard, but totally unrelated to what you actually experience as a consumer,
FOR example I can imagine them saying my service is improved by ten fold -- with Premier I got only 1% of the Premier advertised rate, and now I get nearly 10%. of the Preferred advertised rate. I feel so much better!

Are you trolling or is this legit? Cox NEVER had a 1GBps service. Only one offering that is Google Fiber. Do you have Cox Business or are you confused?

Hi Tiffany!
I tried this (and should've mentioned that I rent my wireless router from Cox, though I'm guessing you already know that), and I actually couldn't load anything internet pages though my computer confirmed there was a signal and the router recognized the connection in the port in the back the ethernet cable was plugged into. I used the same cable that I used when I first set up the internet connection in November.
I've tested the connection a few times today (wireless) - a couple of times it was fine, a couple of times it was poor, especially the last two tests. I've noticed that the performance is especially poor on my iPad when in my bedroom (where it used to be excellent). I have no splitters and a very small apartment, so distance doesn't seem to be a factor. I also am unable to use the Wifi at greater speeds with my Smart Blu-Ray player (which is Wifi only - can't directly connect). I'm unable to stream movies as it locks up the player and I literally have to cut power to it to get it to shut off.
No offense to Cox's hardware, but I'm thinking maybe it is the router. Cox service is the only thing available in my building and when my computer scans for networks, I've noticed just about everyone else, save maybe one or two, look to have a non-Cox router. I'd rather not pay a monthly fee if I can buy a better product outright and enjoy full service.
waltere and Health Edge - thanks for the information but at this point I'll work with Tiffany and hopefully Cox will solve the problem. No service is perfect (I had similar issues with Comcast, my last provider) but I'd like to given them the opportunity to work with me on this.
Thanks all!
Nicole

Ok, it's been a while but life gets crazy!
I'm still experiencing this issue and additionally my connection drops out. It was so poor last week when I was trying to work from home that our IS performed some tests (couldn't tell you what, I'm sorry) and said that the issue had nothing to do with the wireless service and would be timing out even if I was wired to the modem.
I haven't yet tried changing the channel on the wireless router. I'm not sure how to do that. I poked around in Network Preferences but didn't see anything. If it's at all helpful I have a Macbook Pro on OS X Version 10.7.5.
I'm really hoping to square this away. I need to be able to work from home and these performance issues are really starting to cripple me in that regard.
Thanks!
