Can't connect to email account on any device

Hi, I have 2 Cox email accounts that I've previously been able to connect to, without any issues, from both Mac Mail and my iPhone. However, for the last 2 weeks I've been unable to connect to one of these email accounts from either device (this issue started happening at the same time on each device). I get errors telling me that the username or password is incorrect, but I've ensured several times that I am using the correct password. To my knowledge, no settings have changed in either email client that would cause this. I've tried changing my password and updating it in each email client, and even tried deleting and re-adding the account, all with no success. I can, however, access my account via webmail. Throughout all of this, I have still been able to connect to my other email account without any issues.

Is there some kind of outage or other server issue that might be affecting certain email accounts, including mine?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi avblue,

I am sorry you're having so much trouble with your email and I would like to offer some assistance.  When you changed your password did you use a new password or did you change it back to what it was previously?  It would be best to create a new password if you did not do so already.

Removing and adding the accounts back is a good troubleshooting step, however it also gets rid of all of the messages you have in your Inbox. What error do you get when you try to access your email in Mac Mail or your iPhone?

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I used a new password when I changed it.

When I try to access my email in Mac Mail I'm told "Mail can't connect to the account 'username@cox.net'." and it asks me to enter in a password. Every time I enter in the correct password, this same error window keeps popping up. On my iPhone it tells me "The username or password for 'username' is incorrect."

Does the username actually show as 'username@cox.net'?  If so that need to be changed to the username for the email account you're trying to access.

Hi Chris,

No no, it says my actual username. I just censored it here to protect my privacy. Sorry for the confusion!

avblue,

Apple did an update recently causing problems with sending mail. The issue seems to be with the outgoing mail server/port settings. If the following steps fail, please remove all outgoing servers(from edit server list section), restart mail, and add the server back in using the settings below.

MAC Mail Will Not Send
1. Verify you can open and browse the internet
2. Remove all messages in the outbox
3. Click Mail (to the top left)
4. Click Preferences (make sure you are on the accounts tab)
5. Select the appropriate account to the left
6. Press the drop down next to the outgoing server (bottom right)
7. Click edit server list
8. Select the appropriate server(to the top)
9. Click advanced (in the middle)
10. Verify settings here
a. Use custom port 25  ssl off  authentication none
b. Use custom port 465  ssl on  authentication password
c. Server name smtp.cox.net (should not contain east, west, central)

Let me know if this helps.

I believe that they have had an unreported problem. I have had the same problem for about the same period of time but now it's all cleared up again. One of my biggest complaints about Cox is their apparent attempts to cover up problems with their systems. I have never once received any credit for lost time or slow connections nor have I ever received any notice of any problem. Two weeks without email is way too much to tolerate in my opinion and they will not even acknowledge that there has been a problem nor do the ever. All we ever ask is to be straight with us and stop blaming our equipment every time we ask a question. When we do not make any changes to our system and everything works fine one day and not the next, what are we supposed to think? But I do thank Cox for the forum for my RANT. I had 3 different mail clients go out at the same time but only for cox email; not for any of my other email servers

Hi Stephanie, this didn't solve my problem. It's not an issue with just sending mail, it's an issue with my mail clients not connecting to my Cox account at all. This is still happening on both my computer and my iPhone.

Phxken, when you had this issue did it resolve itself automatically after a while? I agree, the length of time this issue has been happening is extremely frustrating. I'm 99.9% positive that this is not an issue on my end.

avblue,

What version OS is on your phone and mac?

On my Mac is OS X Mavericks 10.9.2. I read up on the latest update that caused the sending email issue for some, but I had the update weeks before I started experiencing this issue.

On my iPhone is iOS 6.

On April 12, as I was on vacation, I realized that none of our iPhones, iPads or Android phones could connect to the mail server. Invalid username/password. I logged onto my cox account directly and changed the password. Then I updated each device. Everything seemed fine until the next day. Same error was presented. Just for giggles, I went back in and simply changed my password...TO MY EXISTING PASSWORD. And it worked...for about 12 hours. When I got home, I tried to open Microsoft Outlook on my home PC and it kept complaining that I had an invalid username/password for imap.cox.net. Again, I had to log in to cox.net and change my password to my existing password and it worked for about a day. Clearly, if every device I have, across multiple operating systems, are all failing, then this is a COX issue.

That time frame does match with security issues we were having and the symptoms do relate to it working temporarily before the automated system locks a account back out for security risks. If you change the password on the Cox site to something you have not used before does have the problem after the 12 hour time frame?

Hi Edward, yes, the problem persists even after changing the password to something I've never used.

We will need to have our mail administrators take a closer look at the account there in that case being its intermittently allowing the connection. If you can email us at cox.help@cox.com with a link to the forum post and the account information and we can escalate it further.
