My household recently upgraded to a Cox (all 3) bundle & naturally setting everything up. The caller-ID wasn't working right away, but we didn't care about getting that fixed right away. In the mean time, I had been changing the caller-ID info in the "Phone Tools" section here online (adding names if there wasn't, or changing them to how we better recognize the person). This worked nice & the new IDs displayed on the LCD of our phone.
Today, my dad got around to calling Cox & we got the TV-banner feature activated (for w/e reason, someone hadn't "clicked it on" for us when we first signed up.....same with the 1-year free STARZ we were supposed to get...weird), he tested the banner by calling our home-phone with his cell phone. It came up, had his number, but the ID was "CA Cell" --- what it had been on the online log here (before I changed it to his first & last name).
I did some brief internet searching (as well as looking through the TV settings) & it seems you CAN'T change this information for the TV caller-ID. Is that true (that you can't change it)? (If so......that just seems a little stupid. If I can edit the information online & have it reflected on the phone's screen, why couldn't the TV be affected? (especially since all 3 are connected via the bundle)).

Cox can change the caller ID for any number you own with Cox. Sometimes it takes a couple days to kick in, but the process isn't that too hard.
However, they can't change what comes up for your dads cell phone, since they don't own that number. He would have to contact his phone provider to get his changed/corrected. If you call a call number and the caller ID info is different then when yiou call a number on a different provider (ATT, Verizon) etc, then that will have to be corrected by having a ticket made for Cox's test desk (phone fixing department).

Thanks, that pretty much was what I had seen when looking elsewhere.
In a bubble I get that reasoning, but in "operation" that still is very odd to me. They let you change the data in the online phone-log. That change is then reflected on our home phone. So, that means the data is going from the internet back to our modem, out the phone-line plugged into our modem, & into the phone - why couldn't work similarly? (Go from the modem into the line where the coax-splits (to TV & modem) & do the same with the TV).
Also, it's just a little logically weird, because it's not as if the method that works on the phone-screen is actually changing my dad's phone number or how Verizon has his listed. That is, I would think the "TV" could "read" the number, then just display any name you tell the TV to associate with that number. ex: in a cell phone you could input your friend's name as "Batman" and when he calls you "Batman" is shown (with the number) - but it's not actually changing your friend's name in his provider's database. I don't get why the TV caller-ID can't work the same way. My dad has a friend named Jim _____, and when he first called our phone said _____ Jim (he's also a Cox customer, that's probably how it's entered on his end). On the phone-log I changed it to just say "Jimmy" since that's how we know him (ie: I look at the screen & easily see "Jimmy's calling"). I would think the TV could just know what his incoming number is, then associate that with whatever text we wanted to input.
This obviously isn't some big issue, it just seems like it would be so simple & so I'm confused as to why it's not possible.

Sorry I don't fallow. Are you talking about the caller ID data? If so, it doesn't work that way. The caller ID look up is done at the switch (phone server) level, and usually leverages some third party solution like Neustar. Then that data is delivered to the phone, exactly how is a little different depending on if you have a inside phone modem or outside phone modem. It isn't digital data though when it reaches your phone, and the system isn't advanced enough to share the data with other devices in your house. Think of it like CC; if you turn it off or change it on one TV, it doesn't do it on all of them. Also the way the information is attached to the signal is somewhat similar
As for the TV caller ID, its not really caller ID at all. When the switch processes the call, if you have digital cable a command in the number profile tells it to send a secondary alert to your cable box through a different path. Not sure how to go into detail without becoming very dry. If your bored wiki (and google) have a bunch of sites that can get you started. Here is one.

Yea, I wasn't to clear (I was just assuming that if the phone-screen could reflect the "data" I altered online with my cox-account, that the TV should too)
So, does this mean the mechanics of it all aren't able to carry out my "cell phone example" either? (ie: my house (whichever device) receives the phone-call & the data telling the phone-#. Then, it would just pair whatever text I told it to pair with that particular phone-#, just as a cell-phone address book would do).

What you enter into your phone is only for reference. So if you set 555-5555 as "Easter Bunny" then that just means each time that number calls, "Easter Bunny" comes up on your phone. Are you saying your cell phone has the ability to do this online? If so, then all it is doing is the same thing as above, but allowing you a different interface to change it.So it doesn't change what it "is" just what you see it as, if that makes sense. Caller ID is one way only. If your on a Cox phone, then your outbound caller ID will show what ever they have in their system. If someone puts into their phone a different name then you for your number, that doesn't change what Cox has in their system for that number.
I think your talking about some kind of caller ID sync/cloud system? Its a interesting idea, but I don't think it exists.

Ah, that ** then :-/. Yea, it makes sense. I didn't think the number was changing, just that maybe you could attach your own "text" to the number it receives. To you use your example, that even if 555-5555 was a registered COX number for Greg Jones, that I could customize my end so that "when you receiving incoming # 555-5555, display the name Easter Bunny". It's still registered to Greg & it may appear as Greg Jones on the ID of others, but on ours it would be Easter Bunny. (Same with the cell-phone example, you have no control over Greg's number or how he's registered with his provider, you're just saying the name you want your device to associate with his incoming number).
I guess I'm just disappointed because this doesn't seem too hard to accomplish (I mean...my analogy was cell-phones address books, which are very common). Thanks for walking through the process with me though!

Well you can with some phones. But it has to be done on a phone by phone basis. What kind of landline phone (not cell) do you have? And are you saying when you update info for a number in Phone tools it changes how it comes in on the phone but not the TV? If so, I had no idea Cox even offered that feature. And it would make sense that it wouldn't work with TV caller ID since the message is sent to the cable box before it goes through phone tools. Alot of times I will see the message on the screen a split second before I even hear the phone ring. This is all just speculation though. Could a moderator confirm?
Also, you can have your father contact his cell company and have them change the caller ID for his number too. Who is his provider?

But does it change the name that comes up on the phone caller ID?

We have a vtech landline phone (not sure on model number) - just a "normal" one (ie: doesn't have it's own answering machine), but it does support caller ID.
Yea, the screen on my phone-handset does reflect changes I made under Phone Tools. So when I changed my dad's friend's name from Jim to Jimmy, it showed Jimmy in all of the future times he called.

Wow, well...wow. I love learning new stuff, thank you. :-) But it doesn't line up with how I know the system to work. Or atleast how I thought it worked.
@Tiffany Is this something new maybe? Maybe with the visual voicemail upgrade?

Glad to help, haha :)
Yea, that's why I got "frustrated", because I thought if it was possible through that method, that it should be for the TV. (But as I've found here, the "signal" the TV is showing it coming straight from the 'source'. I wouldn't think it'd be too hard for Cox to set up something that lets you change it though. Type names/numbers in with you remote, just like you do when searching in the guide, etc. Eh, it is what it is.).

The other limitation is that the Caller ID information is sent to the receiver separately. For example, if you unplug your modem so no lights are on and call your house phone, it will still show on the TV, even though it's not making it to the modem. I hope this helps.
