Can no longer send email from my Mac

I have been able to send & receive emails until today when mysteriously, my ability to send outgoing mail just stopped. When I try to send email I get the message: "Cannot send message using the server cox.net. The smtp connection to server "smtp.cox.net" failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click try Later." The only option highlighted in the box is " cox.net" (Offline).

I have gone to the Connection Doctor. It says:

"Mail was able to connect to the Internet."

"Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username & password are correct."

Which I have verified & are correct.

I am on an iMac OS X Version 10.9.4.  I have a second Mac at home on the same Wifi network, and it has no trouble sending/receiving email.  I've checked and every single setting for the mail accounts on the 2 systems are identical.

I have also searched the cox forum and found other folks who had the identical problem, with no apparent solution from Cox.  For those folks it just started mysteriously working again.

So to be clear, 2 iMac computers, same settings, same wifi network, one doesn't work. Same username and password? If so, then must be something with the client. Try deleting the profile and creating a new one inside Mac Mail. Also, why are you using username/password to send? If on Cox network typically you don't need it, just need to send it on port 25.

We know the connection is good. We know the login is good. We know that Cox servers work, you can send from the other computer with the same settings.

Sherlock Holmes my friend.

It has to be the Mac. Try removing and re-adding the profile.
