Can you connect a wireless router to a modem? Yes, of course.
Can you connect a wireless router to a Cox Gateway? No, you wouldn't want to.

Wireless g wasn't released until mid 2003. A 2000 vintage computer (if it has an original WiFi adapter) probably uses 802,11b standard and WEP security. That will give you a theoretical max of 11Mbps and a practical thruput of around 5Mbps or less. You would need a router that still supported wireless b and have the security issues associated with WEP encryption. Not sure it's cost effective to go this route.
As Chris posted, you don't want to connect a router to a gateway. What "Cox cable modem" do you have?

Yes, you would be able to connect a wireless router to your cable modem. How old is the wireless adapter in the computer that you're using?
