Cable channels not available in box in bedroom...

We have a cablecard box in living room, and it's fine for all I pay for, my channels are there. Multiple HBOs and SHOWTIME channels. The Scientific Atlanta box (HD digital) they gave me for the bedroom does NOT get all the channels I get in the living room. So, I called Cox and the lady said the only way to get those channels in the bedroom, is to get a Contour box, and it has to be installed by Cox.

I can't believe this. Why did no one at Cox know that I'd want all channels I pay for in my bedroom, why did they give me that Sci Atlanta box in the first place? Secondly, I have TiVo in the living room, and I don't want to pay for any DVR Contour box in the bedroom. I don't need that service or function there. All I want is a box in my bedroom that gets ALL the channels I pay for and subscribe to.

Help please!

Yea, something doesn't seem correct there. I could understand the reverse, that you wouldn't get all the channels with the cable card(Tivo) that you do with the cable box, because of limited tuning ability of the Tivo.

But your saying the Scientific Atlanta(SA) box doesn't get them? Which channels? Also, what kind of box is the SA box?

The Scientific Atlanta equipment is not capable of tuning the Contour HD channels, because they are too old. The SA equipment tuners top out at 860MHz and cannot tune MPEG4/H.264 Video. (only MPEG2)

The Contour HD channels are broadcast above 900MHz and are MPEG4/H.264 (not MPEG2)

Most newer CableCARD equipment (TiVo Premiere & Roamio included) are able to tune up to 1GHz and also MPEG4/H.264.

For Cox leased Equipment, Cox requires the Contour Package, at a premium price.

For CableCARD devices, as long as the device is capable of tuning, the Contour HD channels are free, (assuming you subscribe to the corresponding package)
CableCARD and Retail Devices

So get another CableCARD device for the bedroom and you are good.  If you have a 4 Tuner TiVo Premiere, or TiVo Roamio, all you need is a TiVo Mini.

What CableCARD device are you currently using in the Living Room?

I cannot find the tuner specs for the Samsung GX-SM530CF CableCARD Box, but it should work since it is so new.

Thanks, Health Edge.. here an example of the channels I get in living room, and only marked those in bedroom; just a sample:

HBO 1200 - 1208 - in living room, Cable card box

HBO 1200 - 1201 - in bedroom, Sci Atlanta box

The Sci Atlanta box is Explorer 4240 HDC. It's a digital box with HD, since I got that from Cox when wife got an HDTV for the bedroom.

The living room box is CISCO STA 1520...

Thanks,

Could you mention some of the channels you're missing in the bedroom? It sounds like they might be 1GHz/H.264 channels, which the TiVo might receive but your bedroom "box" (model number ??) has a tuner which cannot receive these channels. If this is so, they'd all be HD channels.

The Sci Atlanta box is Explorer 4240 HDC. It's a digital box with HD, since I got that from Cox when wife got an HDTV for the bedroom. I think somebody at Cox should have told me I'd need a better box to get all my channels.

The living room box is CISCO STA 1520...

I don't want to lease another expensive box for bedroom just to get these channels; that's a ripoff since I don't want or need any DVR (Contour) in the bedroom; I use TiVo in living room as my DVR. I'd only want the chttannels, not a Contour DVR package.

Can I lease a Contour box without a DVR attached, and what's the monthly rental/lease fee? How much will I pay more for that box or service than I pay now for my Sci Atlanta box?

Thanks,
DrWeb

I have in the past found this info. The Samsung box indeed does support 1GHz/H.264

Indeed, HBO channels 1203-1208 are normally 1GHz/H.264 channels. The 4240HDC will not receive these channels. The 4640HDC, 4650HDC, 4642HDC, 4652HDC, and 4742HDC will receive these channels. I don't know which of these receivers your local Cox carries, or what if any additional charge may apply.

BTW, these channels were all part of the old "Plus Pak", and really weren't part of your paid subscription. Long story.

We would also need to know if it supported Copy Protected content in H.264/MPEG4.  The TiVo Premiere did not when Cox first introduced the Plus Pak HD.  TiVo had to update the software to accommodate that.

Not being a DVR, I doubt that the Samsung receiver would be bothered by that. Only way to tell for sure is a hands-on test. I doubt it would be specified anywhere.

Both 1GHz and MPEG4 compatibility are mentioned in the manual at: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201401/20140108134347468/GX-USA-SM530CF-00568A_Ed.03_Eco_optimized-Web.pdf

Thanks to all for the help and tips. I looked at the Samsung option on Amazon, interesting.

Domino - I'm going to check and see if Cox Solutions Store in San Diego has one of those cable card boxes I can use in the bedroom, thanks for that list. On the Plus Pak, I paid for it, and they "grandfathered" that and a few others into my current subscriptions, on bill it shows no charge for that.

Take care all, and thanks again,

OK. One of those Cisco receivers I mentioned should do the trick. They should have at least one in San Diego. Good luck.

Last time I checked you needed the full Contour Whole Home DVR Package with Professional instal to get any Contour HD channels on Cox leased Cisco equipment.   You were not able to get just one HD STB and receive those channels. Retail CableCARD devices were the only exception.

Hopefully things have changed, Let us know.

He says he was "grandfathered" in at no charge from the old "Plus Pak" days. So am I.
