My cable box, currently turned off, is making clicking whirring noises. I have never heard these before. Any idea what it is happening?

Do you have a DVR? If so, my guess would be the Harddrive is starting to die. If its a normal box, then its probably the fan on the power supply. Either way you will probably need a replacement box soon.

What is the model number of your "box"? Some "boxes" have small fans, which can make "clicking whirring noises" if going bad. Is this a constant or intermittent malady?

One way to check which it is, is to reboot the box, and listen for when the sound starts. If it starts right away, then its probably a fan, and not as worrisome. If it takes a couple seconds, then its probably a hard drive, which means your DVR might die soon. Which means you would lose everything you have recorded, so FYI, might want to catch up on anything you have recorded before you have to swap.
