Audio from cable
Is the audio from my digital cable box analog or digital? If it is digital coming into box can I get the digital signal from the box so I can convert it to analog myself?

It depends on which connector on the cable box you're using. If you're using HDMI, coax or optical...it's a digital signal. If you're using RCA connectors, it's analog.
Just keep using digital cable up to your DAC.
