Ok, I am not assuming anything and want to ask for opinions. Let it be known too that I am pretty tech savvy and have a degree in Information Sciences and Technology from Penn State. That being said, I can assure any problems I may be having are not on my end.
If I pay for the ultimate internet package with 150 mbps speeds, how come I only get 40? I have called and went to a Cox office a few times about this and was pretty much told that well gee, 150 is the max speed and we are not guaranteed that. I understand that. I know realistically that I probably won't hit 150 mbps, 99% of the time, however, to be within 20% of advertised speeds would be realistic.
I have performed speed tests hard wired directly in the modem. A few months ago, I would get 100+ without a problem. Then all if a sudden it disappeared. It's now 3 AM, a low use time and my highest speed was 44.19.
I asked the rep then I should drop my package down to only pay for 50 mbps if I am only getting 40. He tells me that if I do that, I would probably get 10 or 15. I don't get it. Is that not false advertising? Why am I paying for something that I am not even getting 50% of what is promised and get mocked be tech support? $70 a month for a 40 Meg connection seems expensive.
What else can I do? I would switch if there were an alternative. We have about 15 devices connected and do a lot of streaming, so having the higher bandwidth is needed. The service is constant. I do not suffer any issues other than speed. Remember, I am testing directly into the modem with no router or other devices connected.
Also, what is the point of rolling out gigabit speeds if you are going to limit people to 400 GB of data. It's like giving somebody a Ferrari but saying, hey, don't go past that stop sign down the street.
I bet you that if instead of sending check for $70, I sent a check only for $30, since I am only agreed to pay "up to" $70, they would not be very happy.
Thanks for your feedback.

I am happy that I found this post, I am going to discontinue my services with Cox. I was told by a tech that I should upgrad my modem, I went to the solutions store near my home.
Inquiry: I purchase a NetGear WiFi Modem on Dec. 13th. at the Middletown RI. Cox solutions store. The clerk assured me that if I needed tech support it would be available. I was able to reconnect everything and had a problem with enabling a secure network and creating a password. I called for Cox troubleshooting for help. The answer I got was, call Netgear. I call Netgear had a very long wait and then was assigned an agent. He then told me that he could help me if I purchased a contract 6 months for $79.99. I was not happy with that after spending over a $100.00 on this modem which I thought the tech support would be free even for 30 days. So to make a long story short if I did not buy into this contract I was not able to use my modem. I am very unhappy with Cox and I am out $79.00. I have been a customer for 11 1/2 years and now I am ready to go to another internet service provider. I will be returning this item and closing my service which costs me quite a bit of money that I really cannot afford. I feel as though I was forced into buying a contract with Netgear and Cox.
My Cox bill is close to $500.00 now. Have been a customer for 12 years now. I kept getting the runaround when contacting Tech Support. Why did I have to pay Netgear Tech support when I purchased this item from Cox? I am getting rid of this service soon.

To dstrausser83. What model modem do you have? First thing I would do is check the signal levels on 192.168.100.1.
To pupsmom I feel your pain. I also live in RI and miss when Cox Tech Solutions covered all of Cox's Home networking. Now Cox only sells gateways (which are junk) and at retail, so you only get real support if you paid for a home network installation. Otherwise its like buying a router at Walmart.
If you need help, we can help here. What was the problem you had with the Netgear?

Health Edge had I bought this wifi modem at Walmart or any other place I would have received free tech support from Netgear. Go figure...this is what the Netgear tech told me.

I meant what is the model number? Judging from those signal levels alone, looks like a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.

At first glance I thought it was DOCSIS 2 also, Health Edge. Then I looked at my SB6180 and found an identical page. Under the "Signal" tab I get:
Under the "Connect" tab I get the channel details:

Yes, but a DOCSIS 2.0 modem would also look like that. So yea, it doesn't mean he definitely has a D2 modem, but it still a valid question. Usually someone in IT..when asked what kind of hardware they have, will give the model number. Hmmmmmmm

Correct, we still need the model number, Motorola makes a few "small boxes". He did post he was getting 100+Mbps a few months ago, if correct that says DOCSIS 3. Hopefully someone with an IT degree from Penn State knows what hardware and speeds he is getting. @dstrausser83, please post the details and your router's model number also.
Health, do you have any idea why Moto has that "Signal" page? It looks like just a duplicate of the 1st upstream and downstream channel levels on the next page. I'm not sure what it means.

Yes, I know what hardware speed to get :)
Anyways, yes I have a DOCSIS 3.0. It is model SB6182.
Last night I called again because my Firestick wasn't loading Amazon Prime movies. They said on their end they saw the modem getting 165 download. I find that impossible. They resent the signal to the modem and I've now peaked at 65 but that's about it.
Thanks again for your help.

LOL And I am in the business side of IT. I can program and stuff like that, but it is more a passion. I learned it in order to sell it. I mostly posted this detail about my education so that I don't get the typical level 1 and 2 support that I get from Cox as I'm beyond that on my own. I wanted to let people know who would be possibly helping me that I know what I am talking about and am educated in the field, but not necessarily an expert.
I also didn't have access to my modem until today, I just remembered it was a Motorola, hence the posting.
