Yahoo Email Transition - Links & Resources

Hi All,

We've pulled together a list of the most helpful threads you've posted related to the Cox.net email move to Yahoo. Thanks to our community members for sharing your tips and tricks!

Also, just a quick note, not all customers and email accounts are being transitioned at the same time.  You will receive emails from Cox in advance to let you know about your email moving to Yahoo. When your email is ready to make the move, you will receive an email from Yahoo with instructions on how to do so.

If you have multiple email addresses, each of them will receive their own individual instructions when they are ready to move.

On to the Topics!

MacMail - Yahoo Email Setup as documented by tkaz

MacOS Mail App Setup as documented by @Lyndonb95

Outlook 365 Setup for Mac Users as documented by tkaz

Yahoo Email Transition - iPhone Setup as documented by MangoMan

Thank you Chris,

This the best collection of topics and [more importantly for me] the most concise description of what to expect from the move. Cox failed to inform me of the process 1st of all, then I received the hi-jacked link; but nothing really informative. Kudos to you and anyone who helped with this. My Outlook 2019 still unusable, but now I've got enough to try that later.

Thank you for this.

There is another issue that Outlook users may face. . Yahoo limits the number of items in an Outlook folder to 10,000. Beyond 10,000 they will not download/synch any remaining items. As an example, before I transitioned to Yahoo I had over 28,000 items in my Outlook inbox folder for my COX email account. After transitioning and synching with Yahoo, that same folder only had 10,000 items. Logging on to Yahoo directly I verified that all of those emails where still there, but it would only put 10,000 into my Outlook inbox folder. To resolve this problem, I had to create multiple new folders within Outlook for my COX email account and drag thousands of emails from my inbox over into those folders taking care to not exceed 10,000 for any one folder. This required multiple rounds of moving emails, forcing a synch with Yahoo to get more emails into my inbox (which was really slow), and then rinse and repeat until my fully synched inbox was less than 10,000. This was a royal pain in the rear and took quite some time to accomplish. After doing some research I found that Yahoo has known about, and often denied, this issue for years. Yahoo is not exactly what I would call a top tier provider.

Have you considered cleaning out stuff you don't need.

Beyond quota issues, you're already having severe performance impact. You've also built a high-risk trove of information to plunder if anyone gains unauthorized access.

Yes, I have cleaned those files, but I have 20 years worth of email that I want to retain. The performance issue was never a problem before the transition, but that changed when using Yahoo. Synching with Yahoo has been much slower. To avoid that problem my non-inbox folders are treated as data and I do not synch them with Yahoo after the initial population. As far as the security issue goes you always need to assume that if you get hacked you are pretty well screwed. So firewalls, VPNs, appropriate antivirus/malware software, password management, and good security awareness procedures are a must. Most people don't realize just how much personal data can be gleaned from the average PC. So am I invulnerable? Of course not. My really sensitive files are on an external drive that gets disconnected after each use. CISM here.

Have you considered sitting down with a trusted relative or friend and having them help you sort out what's really important from 20 years' worth of emails? I know it can be difficult to part with precious information but sometimes we need another perspective on the actual value of these pixels and electrons, vs. their liability.

We should also consider offline archiving, instead of making Yahoo!s servers hold it all in perpetuity. Put it on a Bitlockered thumb drive, burn it to a CD-ROM, throw it in a drawer. Cost of electricity and maintenance: $0.

Hackers cannot work miracles, and our job is to reduce our risk profiles. Consider an automobile full of your stuff. Parked in front of your house it's safe. Park it downtown and it's a different story. Place your valuables in the trunk, out of sight, or leave a stack of $20s on the front seat? Have a loaded firearm under your pillow, or take out the ammo and store rifle in a safe? Your tax and insurance documents are in ten cardboard boxes in the kitchen/basement, or in a fireproof file cabinet with a key lock on it?

Now that Cox doesn't control the email services and Yahoo does, does that mean that the accounts won't be deleted if any of us decides to use an Internet provider other than Cox? I'm really getting sick of Cox trying to force mobile down all of our throats just to get a promotional deal, so it is a possibility.

I received my Yahoo email notice last night, which was the last email I got through my MS Outlook. Cox and Yahoo have totally cut off my access to email through Outlook. I followed the Yahoo online instructions to transition my Cox email to Yahoo email and it failed. I use SMTP and my changes match exactly the Yahoo instructions.

And to top it off, Yahoo wants to charge me for assistance…

Already talked to Cox Tech Support who told me there isn't anything they can do as the email account is now with Yahoo.

You need to work with Yahoo to ensure cox.net is recognized as a valid custom domain for mail.yahoo.com "add mailbox" feature & with yahoo servers

I'm hoping you have test email accounts on Yahoo ?? - log into one of them and in settings try adding a different cox.net account using "add mailbox" feature with "Yahoo" as the service provider and see what happens 🤦

JulianN,

I believe that the technical issues are only a part of the problem folks are experiencing. The larger problem here is that COX has dumped our email service off to a second rate provider that wants to charge us for technical support and cox technical support has simply abandoned their former customers. In addition, Yahoo's online service blocks part of our viewing area with adds (unless you pay extra to get rid of them) and has limitations and performance issues that we never had with Cox. After doing a little research I also see that Yahoo has a history of massive data breaches and is considered one of the most hacked email service providers. Based on how COX has handled this transition I have totally lost faith in COX as a service provider. I am currently evaluating other service providers for my remaining Internet, phone, and cable TV needs. I no longer trust COX.

Hi SteveG1,

I completely understand how frustrating it is whenever there are issues with transitioning your email services from Cox Web Mail to another email service provider. The forum members are here to help you and you may also reach out to our technical support 24/7 via Live Online Chat: https://www.cox.com/residential/contactus.html or through CoxHelp, Facebook, or by calling us at 1-800-234-3993.

We want to make the transition as painless as possible. You also have the option before transition to choose not to transition, however, if you would like to retain your content, you will need to move your data to another service provider or download your emails before your transition date. There are free and paid software options available to help you archive your email content for storage. If you choose another provider other than Yahoo you will not have the cox.net address anymore unless your choice of email serviceproviders will allow for it.

I hope that we can regain your trust even if we are no longer providing you with email service.

Thank you,

Mike

Are you surprised? I'm not disappointed, I am completely and thoroughly disgusted. I can't even add one of my cox emails to Yahoo because Cox doesn't have the right security.

I need help setting up in Windows Mail, which is run by Outlook, but is definitely not the same as regular Outlook.  It's been over a week since my mail was moved over to Yahoo and I haven't been able to successfully set it up.  I followed the general instructions and it ended in a complete cluster****.  Please don't abandon your customers now.

My Cox transitioned just fine for one exception: because my husband's name is on the Cox account, all my Yahoo emails I send say they are from Mark. I can't find a way to fix it on Yahoo. How do I fix this?

You can change the name.  Tap in the name and a box should appear allowing you to change the name.

Chris,

I received one email with instructions and links to switch my email over to Yahoo. I’m have an issue with all the personal information being asked for.
social security number, credit card with pin, bank routing information, etc.  Why is this necessary or is it a scam? I’ve had my three Cox email addresses for almost 40 years so you can imagine I’m a little upset with this change.

Thanks for your post. It sounds like the email you received is fraudulent, as your personal information and credit card are not needed for the transition.

As long as you can still sign in at https://myemail.cox.net/ and see your inbox, your email has not transitioned. When it does, when you sign in at https://myemail.cox.net/ instead of your inbox, you will see an announcement that your mailbox has moved and be directed to the Yahoo mail page.

My Cox email just moved to Yahoo.  If I now leave Cox as a customer, will I always get to keep my cox.net email name or will they hold me hostage?  And if I can keep it... can I get that commitment in writing?

Who will control the cox.net MX records now?  Cox or Yahoo?  I'm sure Cox will continue to own the domain and will always have the capability to direct mail wherever they like and perhaps not Yahoo!  Is there a legal document proving who controls the MX records?

If I ditch Cox internet for another ISP, does this affect the cox.net email accounts in any way?

Those email accounts are now completely controlled and routed thru Yahoo servers aren't they?

We value your business and your participation in our Community Forums, so I certainly don't want to see you go, but the truth of the matter is that once your email account has transitioned to Yahoo, it is managed by Yahoo and not tied to your Cox account or services in any way. But this only applies if all email accounts associated with your service have fully transitioned, meaning that when you try to sign in at https://myemail.cox.net/ you are NOT seeing your inbox, are redirected to the Yahoo email platform, and can successfully sign into the Yahoo platform and see your inbox for each account. The added caveat is that you must maintain activity on the account by signing into Yahoo mail regularly. (per their guidelines.)

If you are considering a change I'd like to hear more and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the matter with you. Please email us at cox.help@cox.com with your full name, complete street address, the details of your concern and a link to this post. You can also reach us on Twitter/X  @CoxHelp, or visit us on Facebook.

The last of my Cox emails have moved to Yahoo. This is the largest and I can get my emails online through Yahoo mail

I moved my other emails to my Android phone,  IMAP,  but i can't set up the last one, my default account. I get this error whenever I try. All settings are correct.

"Couldn't verify account

The username or password is incorrect or POP3/IMAP access isn't turned on for this account. Check your email account settings on the web..."

Where is this setting?

Thanks

Transiting from Cox to Yahoo Email was time consuming and difficult.
I guess if we leave Cox we lose the email addresses  totally.
I have heard they will keep email open for you after you leave Cox for 30 to 60 day.
Can anyone verify this?
Thank you

Thanks for your comments! I'm so sorry to hear your mail transition was difficult and time consuming. It was meant to be a simplified process only requiring you to sign into the Yahoo webmail platform once each account had individually transitioned.
We certainly don't want to see you go, but as long as all of your Cox mailboxes have been successfully transitioned to the Yahoo mail platform, they will remain active with Yahoo if you maintain the required activity per Yahoo's mail guidelines. Once transitioned the email inboxes are no longer tied to your Cox services or controlled by Cox.
We really do value your business. If there's anything I can do to help with your account or services, or any other matters please kindly email cox.help@cox.com with your full name, complete street address and the details of your concern.

I am trying to connect to my cox email at Yahoo via Outlook and receiving an error that it could not connect to the IMAP server when I try IMAP or POP when I try POP.

Why???

I use Thunderbird and not Outlook, so the dialog you show looks a bit different.

The ports, the server names, and encryption method are the same as mine.

I also have a box for Authentication Method, which must be set to OAuth2.
