Zeus on a Mac?

I got a pop up in my IPad's Safari browser saying a compter on my network was infected with Zeus.  Isn't Zeus a PC only bit of malware?  And why does the link still go no where?

Looks like its PC only, but that wouldn't stop a browser popup? Did you click on the Ad for what you knew to be malware?

Hi MorningJoe, if you have not already done so, I suggest you contact Apple support or take the device into an Apple Store. Do you have any other devices on your network? If so, you may want to check on them as well.

Can you point to any references to the Mac OS or iOS variant?

I received the same pop-up this morning from Cox, on a Windows machine. I have scanned the Windows machine with 7 different tools and none of them are reporting any positives for the Zeus trojan.

Meanwhile I've been searching for info on any Mac or iOS variant and I have not been able to find any confirmation that it exists. None of my iOS devices are jailbroken, either.

Thanks,

I have not been able to find any credible claim that Zeus can infect a Mac or iOS.  On the contrary,if you check out US-Cert (https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA14-150A) it lists only various Windows OS.  I have parallels on my Mac and occasionally run Windows 7.  My virus scans do not find anything. I even downloaded the free McAfee antivirus from Cox, still negative.

I think Cox is wrong about this.  I'm also a little annoyed at a browser popup (once on my iPad).  Seems a little unprofessional.  And the link to the Cox web site goes to a non-existent page.  People have been complaining about that issue for months with no response from Cox.  It's too bad because ISPs could be a valuable resource for stopping botnets and other malware.

Hi MorningJoe, can you reply with the link to "no where" so we can take a look at it?

Unfortunately I can't,   The popup in my browser is long gone and I got a web page saying the link didn't exist.  I don't know if it was a redirect or not.  There was another question about Zeus that also complained about the non-existent link :  http://forums.cox.com/forum_home/internet_forum/f/5/t/6836.aspx

So what should I do?  What was it that led Cox to popup a window on Safari to warn me of this problem?

Is it any one of these pop-ups? Also, have you tried calling Network Security, AKA Abuse@cox.net?

Abuse Submission Guidelines

The following are the basic submission guidelines to send issues to abuse@cox.net.

  • Do not attach files to the email. For security reasons, attachments will not be opened. Provide evidence by copying and pasting from your log files or email headers.
  • Do not send emails larger than 64 KB (kilobytes) in size (approximately 800 lines).
  • Send emails in plain text format. HTML and Rich Text are difficult to process.
  • Remove extraneous information (such as non-Cox IP addresses) from the report.
  • Do not include trace routes, ping results, or WHOIS information.
