WindowsPhone 8 - cannot receive incoming email as of August 28th

I cannot receive email on my windows phone as of August 28th (or about). Before that date; all worked fine. I can successfully: send email from the windows phone (and receive it elsewhere) send and receive from my desktop (on cox account) There have been no setting changes on my phone; I have confirmed setting: pop.cox.net.

Accepted Solution

Good idea, but I don't actually work here. LOL

What error do you get when trying to receive?

No error message. Everything behaves normally; just that there is never any in-coming mail. Just to clarify, should all four of the following settings be checked? 1) outgoing server requires authentication, 2) use the same user name and password for sending email, 3) require SSL for incoming email, 4) require SSL for outgoing email.

No, SSL is not required for incoming. Atleast not if your using port 110. What server settings are you using?

There is no input field for ports. The settings used are: 1) incoming email server = pop.cox.net, 2) outgoing (SMTP) email server = smtp.cox.net, 3) outgoing server requires authentication, 4) use the same user name and password for sending email. I will note that up to the problem I had been using "central.cox.net", so I changed it to the more generic address that is suggested on the cox site. It made no difference.

Looks like Windows 8 email uses port numbers as part of the server name. See end of this article.

So you would want to use pop.cox.net:110 with no SSL. Otherwise its pop.cox.net:995 with SSL or imap.cox.net:993 with SSL.

That's good information; I made the change. Unfortunately, it didn't change the behavior. I can send, but nothing arrives. It's curious, as everything worked fine just a few days ago, and no changes were made to the email setup, nor any updates to the system.

Without knowing why its not working, I can't think how else to fix it. Maybe try another Windows 8 email app? Or try the same settings on another device?

Well, I tried the "if all else fails solution" (or at least the one to try after a soft-boot). I deleted the Cox email account from the connections, and then added it back, fresh, using the identical settings as before. It now works! I've no idea what might have happened except that somehow over the weekend an internal setting was scrambled. At any rate, thanks for your information, I do have the port settings done correctly. Thanks for your assistance. By the way: you might want to have the instructions updated to include Windows Phone (in addition to Apple and Android).
