Windows 8 Outlook 2013 and webmail

I am struggling setting up an email account the way I want it (like it used to be in Outlook Express). I set up several email addresses when I got this new system but since discovered problems. These addresses were configured with "imap/pop" - kind of a default. When I open Outlook it downloads the email but does not remove it from the server. I've learned that "imap" connects webmail with Outlook such that if I delete an email on webmail it also deletes it in Outlook and vice verse.

One of the surprises, and the way I discovered there was a problem, is I did not receive email for a week on my busiest email address. When I went to webmail I discovered email dated all the way back to August was still there! Wow, the mail box was full and explains why I was not getting any more email. So I deleted this email off webmail. Went back to Outlook and to my shock and surprise it was also deleted out of Outlook! I confess to expressing more than my usual share of bad words. Lots of very important and valuable email lost in cyberspace.

I've tried to create a new email address with pop without success. Online support does not give information for Windows 8 and Outlook 2013, specifically what numbers to use for ports (993, 110, 25, 995, 465, or ?).

Frankly, I feel limited by imap. Pop seems to offer more options like deleting email off the server after a number of days I specify. If anyone has any insight on this or recommendations (imap or pop), or a step by step proceedure to get an email (the way I want it) set up I would be most appreciative. Cox support has step by step for all but Windows 8 using Outlook 2013.

I'm using this at home. Nothing fancy like using gmail, vista mail, live mail, etc., or business connection.

Thanks, Ses.

Hi Ses,

I apologize for all the difficulties you've encountered with Windows 8! I am still trying to learn my way around my Windows 8 laptop, so I completely understand your frustration.

It sounds like you are using the default email "client" in Windows 8, rather than the version of Outlook 2013 included in the Microsoft Office 2013 package. Is this correct?

IMAP does offer features that POP does not, but you should choose whatever setup works best for you and the devices you will be using to access your mail. You can find more info as well as IMAP server settings at http://bit.ly/IMAP-EmailSettings.

Within Windows 8, the server settings will be the same as what is detailed at http://bit.ly/EmailServerNames_POP-SMTP.

Please let me know if this helps!

Hi Becky,

Thanks for your response. Does this help? Well, it seems the more I learn the more overwhelmed I become!

I am not sure what version of Outlook I am using. This is all new to me. How can I tell - Windows 8 or Office 2013 version? When I figure this out I will spend some time with the other to decide which I like better.

Reading the benefits of using IMAP tells me that the email in webmail and the email in my Outlook is connected by design. Is there a space limitation? Is webmail looking at my email on the server?

I'm beginning to feel like a freshman on the first day of class. Sigh. I'll get there eventually.

Thanks,

Ses

IMAP was designed to help better synchronize  your mailbox across all platforms such that changes made on one device are available to all other devices.  This is one limitation POP had in that emails downloaded to a particular device were only available on that device.  With Windows 8 Microsoft is gradually trying to phase out POP access as how it is no longer available in the default email client.  Microsoft Office Outlook may still have POP access or you can download any other email program you choose with this feature if you like.
