Windows 10 Mail (the native Outlook Mail app) won't send via SMTP

Consistent behavior on 3 computers.

Using:

IMAP for incoming  (Imap.cox.net)

Incoming server: Imap.cox.net

Outgoing server: Smtp.cox.net

Outgoing Sever requires authentication

Use same user/password for sending email

Require SSL for incoming

Require SSL for outgoing.

I can receive email just fine.  However, I cannot send email.  Since the Windows 10 Outlook Mail App (not the Office version) does not provide a spot to enter a port number I have tried the following outgoing server addresses:

smtp.cox.net:465

smtp.cox.net:465:0

smtp.cox.net:465:1

I recycled the app between these changes.   I have not been able to successfully send any emails...

Any ideas?

With the latest Windows 10 Cumulative update (KB3093266), the issue with not being able to send emails using a Cox account has been fixed. However, you need to delete and re-add any Cox accounts that you have set up. When you initially try to add an account, you receive an error message indicating it can't find the account. You need to "retry" 3 times, then you will receive an "Advanced" option. Click on that and enter the account info. When you are requested for the Cox username, DO NOT ADD @cox.net at the end.

Same here.  Cannot set up Cox e-mail properly with the Mail App on any of my three Windows 10 computers.  I even did a clean install of WIndows 10 on one of them with no success.  Manual set up of the account will not work either.  I can receive mail just fine just cannot send.

I see this issue documented on Microsoft boards too.  They say sometime the :port#:1 works, sometime it doesn't, must depend on ISP.

Anyway, the quick solution / work-a-round is to use a 3rd party e-mail client like Thunderbird.  T-bird is free and it works.  I have it running on my Windows 10 laptop using imap, no issues sending or receiving mail.  I know that doesn't solve the Microsoft issue but it will get you up and running in a very short time.

I am hopeful that I will get a response from cox about which port:# should work.   Thunderbird it is for now.  Except for my Windows Phone...

says 465 with SSL or 587 with TLS enabled.  587 is worth a try.  Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

We tested the Windows 10 Outlook Mail App and have been unable to get mail sending and receiving properly. As a result, we came to the same conclusion as AllenP: Thunderbird looks like the best option. Since this issue has been lighting up Microsoft forums, I imagine that Microsoft may soon put out a fix to address this problem.

If you discover how to get your email account working properly through the Windows 10 Outlook Mail App, please let us know!

I've been using Thunderbird since the days my other choice was Outlook Express. T-bird has and continues to serve me well. I hated the native Windows 8 email app, mostly because I couldn't run it in a window, had to be full screen. I use dual monitors on my desk, one has T-bird and a few other programs open in windows & I do most of my daily work on the other monitor.  The Windows 8 app didn't work in this environment.  I recommend T-bird as a permanent solution, not only a work-a-round.

Becky,  thanks for the response.   Can Cox comment on which smtp address should work?  That might give folks like me an opportunity to direct our fiddling with the app a bit.  I "think" it should be smtp.cox.net:465:1 for SSL.  

 It appears that the server addresses in the mail app are sticky (sometimes it will not save changed values).

AllenP:  I am using Thunderbird, but find it a bit heavy for a tablet, and can't use it for my phone.  I think a lot of us are using  multiple devices to access our email.   Win 8  was fine using those "lite" devices for the occasional read/reply.

Understand, JustWandering.  Guess my age is showing ... still just think of Windows as a PC OS, didn't think of tablets or phones

I am still using an older iPad 2, with native iOS mail, as my tablet and an Android phone with K-9 Mail.  So I don't know of a lite alternative Windows app.  Sorry

I honestly have no idea where Microsoft got this :0, :1, :2, etc after the SMTP address.  This is not correct host syntax and I suspect something they specifically are aware of with regards to their email app.

Gee, I thought that...  I saw the server:port:# format on several sites, and thought it was a standard part of the protocol.  Bad assumption on my part.  I took a few minutes and educated myself. 

So at the end of the day, this is Microsoft Mystery Meat.

I've been using Windows Live (Essentials) Mail ever since Outlook Express went defunct.  I have deferred upgrading to Windows 10 as I have seen differing opinions regarding the ability to continue using Windows Live Mail with the new operating system.  Has anybody successfully continued to use Windows Live Mail with Windows 10?

 If you mean Windows Live Mail that is the standard app in Windows 8/8.1, then it has been replaced by Windows Outlook Mail. I am not aware that is available for windows 10.

I am having the exact same problem. Able to get the incoming mail, but unable to send.

Here is my story (which might help someone figure out what is the problem). I have upgraded 4 computers so far. The two computers that I did the upgrade with the option to save all apps and files, the windows mail works perfectly. I can send and receive mail no problem. The two that I decided to do a 'clean' install (the one that removes all files and app), the mail program only receives and does not send.


When windows upgrades and 'imports' all my settings from windows 8.1, the mail app recognizes the old cox settings and only asked for my password and everything got filled in perfectly. In the two computers where I had to manually input the IMAP and SMTP settings it does not work, even though the settings are exactly the same.

I do not even know where to start looking at what is the difference between them, but I think the problem is not in the mail app itself, but in some sort of setting (maybe a firewall setting?)
