Why can't two xbox game units be on the internet at the same time?

we have two sons and to XBox game units.  When one gets on to XBox live, the other can't, and vice versa.  We have multiple connection potential off our wireless router, thus extremely frustrating.  What is the combination or connection to make this work?

This is a limitation of the xbox actually.  They can both access the Internet at the same time however the most favorable NAT type won't be possible on both at the same time unless your router supports UPnP and that features is enabled on both of the xbox's.  Even then some routers simply have a problem with this setup.  You may wish to check with xbox support for information regarding routers they support.

May I suggest another possibility. While UPnP is the best and easiest way, if this does not work you may look into setting up "Port Triggering" for ports TCP/UDP 3074 and UDP 88. This should not be confused with "Port Forwarding" since that will not work with Two Xbox's. Sometimes UPnP actually has to be disabled once this is done for the triggering to take effect. Usually you can search online how to do this but portforward.com (just be careful not to click on a ad) is a good place to start, or contact your router manufacture.

If all else fails, you could always upgrade your service to Ultimate (if available in your area) that I believe still offers 3 DHCP IP's. That way you could connect a switch to your modem and have a dedicated public IP for each Xbox and still have one for your router. That would be the best performance wise but requires additional hardware and additional cost so it's up to you.

thanks everyone...  I just found out that I was not exactly told everything from the boys.  It depends on which one gets on first, as one can get on (box 1) and the other (box 2) has no problems getting in.  But, if box 2 gets on first, box 1 gets the problem.  .  So, from everything that I see here in the responses, we may have a box setting problem.  This will be the first way I (we) will pursue, and if still a concern, I will check out the suggestions that were made

Thanks everyone!!!

The Ultimate Tier/3 DHCP IP approach will not work actually if you have a router.  The router once it receives the 1st IP address will be satisfied and not ask for any more.  This type of configuration would require a switch between the modem and router.  At that point you could connect both the xbox units and the router and each would receive it's own IP address.
