What channels are MPEG-4? (in Hampton Roads)

Hi,

I am in the Cox Hampton Roads region, is there a list of channels (or groups/packages) showing which are MPEG-4 (vs. MPEG-2)?  I'm trying to sort out some issues and this info would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Dean

Thanks to Bryan for mentioning the possible problem with ARRIS cards and the setup info.

Thanks to Becky for clarifying that the Hampton Roads lineup pdf is incorrect.  I am still missing almost all of my channels (I only get about 10-15).

I started a new question/thread under the title "Tivo HD + CableCard + Tuning Adapter = Headache" with details since the we seem to be moving past the original MPEG-4 question.

Thanks!

deanchat,

I've reached out to our video ops team and have been advised this information is not information we are able to provide you. What is it exactly you are trying to work out in regards to this format? Are you having a technical issue we can assist you with? Please provide details.

Hi Dina,

I have a Tivo HD and added a cablecard and tuning adapter yesterday (to try to get ahead of the "all digital" thing).  The process has not been smooth.  After three calls to Tech Support the cable card now appears to be validated but the tuning adapter does not do anything except blink the amber light.  I now get about 10 channels from the Starter tier and that's it (instead of the 300 or so I am supposed to get as a subscriber to Cox Premier).    Since the Tivo HD does not support MPEG-4, although Tivo is supposed to push an update soon, I am trying to figure out how much of the problem is from MPEG-4 and how much is from the tuning adapter (SDV) .  Info about what channels use MPEG-4 or SDV would be helpful in narrowing things down.

Thanks,

Dean

when you had the cable card and tuning adapter setup were you told to unplug the TiVo and tuning adapter to sync with cox?

Look in your PDF channel listing.

https://www.cox.com/content/dam/cox/residential/documents/tv/channel-lineup/virginia/cl_hamptonroads.pdf

Those HD channels marked with a "triangle" are MPEG4 channels.

Not sure exactly what you mean here.  Power down the Tivo when setting up the tuning adapter?  Aren't the two supposed to communicate (that's how the Tivo tells the adapter what SDV channel to request from Cox, I believe).

When I set things upI did the cablecard first.  I just followed the directions on the supplied install page.  Shut down Tivo, install card, boot Tivo, run through guided setup (Tivo setup), get numbers from cablecard Activation Window that pops up and then call Cox to activate.

Then I did the tuning adapter (the cablecard may not have been properly validated at this time).  Basically the sheet says to use hook up the tuning adapter with the splitter and filter, start it up and then call the self-activation number.  The tuning adapter never went to solid amber, even after unplugging/plugging it back in as well as rebooting the Tivo.  A couple more calls to tech support seems to have gotten the cablecard validated but no progress on the tuning adapter.

Thanks,

Dean

Thanks for the info on the pdf channel listing.  If those are the MPEG4 channels then my problem is more than just MPEG4.  I think I will start a new thread/question for that.

Thanks!

The PDF Notes are wrong.  The MPEG4 HD channels are the ones with the Diamond following the channel

1094 POP HD ◊ should no longer be MPEG4, it should have been moved to the Essential MPEG2 tier.

MPEG4 channels are now limited to some HD versions in the following Paks

  • Movie Pak
  • Sports Paks
  • Premiums, extra HBOs, SHOs, Starz, Cinemax

Thank you for that update.  In any case, it does not look like too many channels (and apparently no "regular" channels) are MPEG-4.

Dean,

I do not know if the TiVo HD is affected, but there is a problem in Hampton Roads with Cox and TiVo and new ARRIS branded CableCARDs.

So if you have a CableCARD that is branded ARRIS, you might try trading it in for an older one that is branded Motorola.

Also see this info regarding the TiVo HD and using one M-Card CableCARD

Hi Everyone, as Bryan pointed out, the Hampton Roads channel lineup PDF is incorrect. Our programming team is working on updates and will post a new PDF soon.

Deanchat, are you still missing channels? Please provide a few examples and any error messages displayed by the TiVo.
