VPN with or without DDNS

I am preparing to open ports on a router ( ( LUXUL ) for HTML access for a homeowners automation system. In the past COX has warned our clients that these ports need to be closed or service could be suspended.  Cox has also shut down DDNS access from a remote location through their modems.  Can you please advise the accepted way for my clients to access their home systems remotely.? These included CCTV , HVAC, Lighting etc.  Some system use DDNS servers to track WAN IP changes and some do not.

Also, I'd like to set a VPN so I can maintain these systems remotely.  Can this be done?  Up until the last year or so we did this on a regular basis, it's only since COX started offering these same services , have I noticed diffculties.  Is there a connection?

I use a DDNS service to access my security cameras along with open ports in the 8xxx range.  I have a modem (from Cox) and a separate dlink router.  The router maintains the dynamic ip with the DDNS service.  Only restriction I know of in the Cox TOS is you can't run a server, I'm not, just using http to access my camera via an 8xxx port.  I know Cox blocks certain ports, see here: http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=cacf82f0-6407-11df-ccef-000000000000 but nothing in the 8xxx range.

So far my security cameras are working fine and I can select which one to access using it''s assigned port.  Haven't tried to setup a VPN so can't help with that.

Your very welcome, Mike, happy to be of help.  Cox TOS can be found here: http://www.cox.com/aboutus/policies.cox

All I have found relevant to this topic is:  You can't ...

1. "Access or use the Service with an IP address other than the dynamic Internet Protocol ("IP") address assigned to you which adheres to dynamic host configuration protocol ("DHCP")."
2. "Use an IP address not assigned to you by Cox."
3. "operate, or allow others to operate, servers of any type or any other device, equipment, and/or software providing server-like functionality in connection with the Service, unless expressly authorized by Cox."

Since you are accessing the network using the dynamic IP provided by Cox, I don't see how it would violate the TOS.  You are only using the DDNS service to maintain a pointer to the Cox supplied dynamic IP.  Cox supplied routers may not have to ability to update the DDNS provider when the dynamic address changes but I don't see how they could block access.  In any case, I would use a separate modem & router.  I know dlink provides free DDNS service if you use their equipment, other manufactures may also but I'm only familiar with dlink.

If I've missed something with the TOS, maybe a Cox rep can chime in.
