Voice Mail

Some of the incoming calls which are being handled by voice mail attempt to generate a call out to a number of their choice.  This is generally some scam type call.  Cox currently stops it by giving the message, "If you wish to make a call, please, etc. etc.".  My question is how are they able to do this and is this not a violation of Federal or State Law?  There is one incoming call that  is received almost every day that does this and I would like to take action against the holder of that telephone number.

Aaalare,

This sounds like an Automatic Dialer situation.

Automatic dialers, or autodialers, are an example of computer telephone integration (CTI). Using special software and a modem, a computer can be programmed to automatically dial a long list of phone numbers.

The computer is dialing your number first and when your voicemail picks up, the computer can tell it is a machine rather than a human answering.

When this happens, the computer on the caller's end starts dialing another potential customer's phone number (using their line,  not yours). What you are hearing is the call being processed and recorded on your voicemail.

There is nothing illegal about this and therefore cannot be stopped.

You can do a few things to reduce these annyoing calls from comng into your line. If the calls are unknown or private number, you can add Anonymous Call rejection to your line which will stop the calls in their tracks prior to entering your line.

You can also register your telephone number at the National Do Not Call Registry at https://donotcall.gov/ This site will allow you to block telemarketers from calling your registerred numbers.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
