video games

Why can I watch Netflix and Youtube flawlessly on my console but when I go to play Call Of Duty or Halo or any game like that it won't let me play and sometimes kicks me offline completely? It is starting to aggravate me pretty badly. Looking for answers on how to fix it without costing me any more money.

If Netflix and other services are performing ok I have to wonder if it may just be a game server issue.  Do you have problems with any other games?

Well I tried Minecraft and it seemed to work just fine, but I didn't try any other games. I did try Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 all the way up through Call of Duty ghosts, and halo reach and halo 4 and none of them would work. Do I just need to get a router and hook it up to my modem or what do you think I should do?

Are you seeing any kind of error messages when it fails to work?

Lets say I was playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, and I was trying to join a game, it would bring up a message that said the servers were unavailable at this time but my friend got into the game just fine. Same problem with the other games and sometimes it would even kick me off of Xbox live entirely. -Darin

Have you by chance tried both wired and wireless connections to see if the problem could be related to one or the other?

I had the same problems a while back. The reason Netflix and Youtube will work is because they can buffer and they do not need a constant connection. Mine would drop about every 30 min and this will not work for games because you need a constant connection with the server. I would check the logs on your modem and also the signal levels.

What are you playing these games on? PC/Xbox 360/etc?

Could you describe the error in detail? Both what it says, and when it comes up. Is it anything like the one in this video?

I fixed the problem. Thanks for trying to help me. If the problem ever occurs in any other forums let them know that hooking up a router to the modem may be the easiest solution. That is what I did and it works great now.

Really? Could you give more detail? Usually I hear the opposite, that if you connect the game system direct to the modem it works better. What kind of router did you get? Maybe it has something to do with upstream QoS? You have me intrigued.

I have tried hardwiring to the modem and it acts just the same as wireless. I read in some other online forums that connecting a good router can fix the problem. I hooked up a Belkin router I found at a local Walmart for around $80 and it seemed to fix the problem. Now when in a party and game with a friend it occasionally kicks them from the party and game. Any ideas on that? Its on xbox 360 btw.

That is odd. Maybe you actually made your connection a little worse by adding the router, but the "squeeky wheel gets the grease" so the game is kicking and lagging them instead of you now? When before you had less latency, so it would slow you down to match them? Just a guess though.

It wouldn't let me play at all before the router. Like I said, I could watch Netflix and YouTube flawlessly with just the modem, but when I tried to play a game it wouldn't work at all and would even kick me offline. Then I got the router and now I can play and stream just fine. My friend will randomly get kicked from my game session though.

Still seems like we don't understand the whole situation, but hey, you fixed it, and in a way I would have NEVER thought of. So props  and thanks for the feedback. If someone comes along with a simular problem and everything else has been explored maybe I will suggest this thread. GLHF
