Upload and Download speeds not meeting standards

Previously, I would have around 10mbps to 15mbps download and 2mbps to 3mbps upload on my network. I am currently paying for the package that is supposed to offer 30mbps down and (I think) 5mbps up. Lately, these numbers have been even worse, coming down to 7mbps down and 1mbps up.

ShortSynapse,

That doesn't sound good. I'd like to help. Are you running your test over a wired or a wireless connection? What website are you running the tests through?

I was testing this on both a wireless and wired connection ( I gave the results of the wired connection because those were the best numbers I was capable of ). I was using speedtest to check download and upload speeds along with ping (which was consistent with a number of games/programs that I run). At the moment, my speed seems to be back up to its usual 15-20mbps down and 2-3 up, but this still isn't what is being payed for... Any suggestions/things to try?

Could you try signing into http://www.cox.com and try some tests using the speed test tool listed under Internet Tools?

I have tested with both the cox speed test and various other speed testing software. They are all consistent with their numbers of ~32mbps down and ~13mbps up. This is appropriate for what is being payed, but this is the first time I have ever tested my speeds in the morning. I will test again later into the evening (which is when I have been having issues).

If you could try the Cox speed test again that would be great.  I'm not seeing any test history for you for some reason.

I have just rerun the test and now I am getting results of: 18mbps down and 8mbps up. This is much different from my test run this morning. I would imaging that this has to do with Cox and network shaping/throttling. While I can't say for certain that is the problem, it most definitely isn't on my end so there is a great possibility that is what is causing it.

Strange, I'm still not seeing any test history for you.  Where are you testing to?

FYI..  I've been testing my speed today with the Cox tool and it shows no history for me either.  Maybe it's updated at the end of the day?

I tested twice yesterday using the cox speed test tool. Both times, the upload and download speeds were rather varied as I mentioned early. I seem to be getting worse speeds as the day goes on.

I would assume that this is because of network shaping/throttling on the part of Cox as my home network is sound.

Will do, Tiffany, thanks very much!

I'll let you know what I find a bit later

I have done a few things today. First, I took your advice and checked all cabling and even redid some that was a bit tangled. Next, I reset both my modem and router, leaving them off for 5 minutes or so until turning them back on. And finally, I changed the channel on which my wireless router broadcasts. So far, I am not having any real issues. I just ran cox's speed test and am getting ~27mbps down and ~20mbps up (more than I would get before). I'll give it a few days of use and see if it really did help, fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone for the help!
