My mother is no longer able to download e-mail in Outlook 2013. When she tries, she gets an error message saying that the server has rejected her password, which works fine when she accesses her e-mail account through the Web client. The live support technicians insist the problem is with Outlook, so I double-checked the settings and tried connecting to her account on a separate computer using two clients: Outlook 2010 and a freshly-installed version of Mozilla Thunderbird. I also tried changing her password through the Web client, a solution suggested in threads about similar issues. I still get the same "password rejected" error. What is going on?

No. When I try to set up the account in Thunderbird, I get "configuration cannot be verified– is the username or password wrong?" In Outlook 2010, I get the same error I got in Outlook 2013 on Mom's computer: "Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings. The server responded: -ERR Invalid login or password." I know the password is correct, because it works fine when I access her e-mail through Cox's website.

It's not. The POP3 server still rejects the user name and password.

VexedTroubleshooter,
What port do you have set in the POP settings? Is SSL selected? Please refer to http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=764bdcc0-0b4d-11e7-fc2c-000000000000#Outlook for what your port settings should look like. The option on when to delete messages from the server can be left as it is if the setting you have is working well for your mother.

I'm using port 995 with the SSL box checked, as the article suggests.

By chance does your password contain a % character? If so try changing it so that it does not use this character and see if that works.

Removing the symbol from her password fixed the issue. I wonder why it suddenly caused problems.
