Ultimate speeds 300/30?
I am only getting mac speeds of 53/30. When I purchased the ultimate I bought an updated computer and a wireless router with a separate modem that can handle blazing speeds. Why am I not getting the speeds that are advertised? I plug in with the wireless and I have done direct connect, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions

I have had the Ultimate speeds for about a year now. The new upgrade I got suggested speeds of 300/30. Before the upgrade I was getting 50/20? I went out and bought a new computer 3.5 inter processor, 16 gig memory with a wireless router and modem that can handle blazing speeds. Both are by netgear the computer is a HP Pavilion, and I don't come any where close to the speeds COX is advertising. Yes I do check wireless versus direct connect. I have power cycled the modem/router several times but I just can't get my computer to run at those speeds. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG. AND WHY AM I NOT GETTING THE SPEEDS I PAY FOR?

When you say 53/30, do you mean 53Mbps down and 30Mbps up? If so, that is unusual, because I didn't know the upload was 30Mbps anywhere. How are you measuring your speeds? Can you copy/paste the results?
What modem and router do you have? To get the Ultimate 300 plan you need modem with atleast 16 downstream channels, like the Arris SB6183/SB6190 or Netgear CM400/500. You also need a router with 10/100/1000Mbps WAN and LAN ports. Further requirements are needed if you are looking for fast wireless speed, but a lot of that will depend more on the wireless capability of your computer then it does the wireless router.
Now, after that is all said and done, if your getting 200Mbps max, the service code on your account is probably wrong. By default, the service code for Ultimate locks you at 200Mbps, unless you have the newer Ultimate 300 code which they only put on if they see you have the newer 16x4 or above modem.

I decided to get the "up to 150 mbps " package when I subscribed, and wirelessly I average about 40 MBPS consistently. I'm going to downgrade my service because I am not getting anywhere near what they advertise wirelessly. My download speed is about 40, while my upload speed is about 25. What gives?
when I connect the laptop to the router directly, I can get about 140 download. Seems that the routers that cox supplies are not able to pass that speed out wirelessly. I have also had two routers to try and debug this, and it didn't matter.

It looks like you have one of the single band wireless-N gateways. The wireless technology used by these devices wasn't designed to handle an Internet connection much faster than about 80Mbps or so after factoring in overhead. From there that speed will diminish further depending on interference, distance from the router, and number of devices actively using the connection. You may wish to consider switching to either a dual-band device at minimum or possibly going with a separate modem/router solution. Note too that even after addressing the limitations of the router the wireless devices individually will need to be able to take advantage of these features as well in order to see wireless speed improvement.

Short answer - wireless will never be even half as fast as wired, with ISP-provided equipment.
If you really refuse to use a direct-to-modem wired connection, then don't rent gateways. The wireless on gateways is inferior to a separate modem and router. Go out and purchase a modem that is MINIMUM 16-channels, preferably more though, like 24 or 32. The Arris SB6190 is 32x8 and the Netgear CM600 is 24x8.
Once you have a good modem, buy an AC-router. I highly recommend the Netgear Nighthawk R7000, it's one of the best routers in its price range. This combination of equipment, should make your wired speeds 330 to 350 Mbps, mine is about 335 consistent. If your laptop has a dual band wireless AC card in it then it should also get speeds at least 200 Mbps, depending on how far the router is.

HH, when Ultimate was upgraded to 300 Mbps downstream, the upstream was increased from 20 to 30 Mbps. My upstream regularly tests at 35Mbps.

Chris_c21, +1 for the Netgear Nighthawk R7000, it's a great router.
If you belong to Costco, there's a more cost effective solution. Costco (warehouse not on-line) is selling the R6700 for only $99.99. The R6700 is identical to the R7000 in chipset, motherboard, memory, etc. The only differences are it only has the one USB3 port on the front, it's missing the USB2 port on the back and the 2.4GHz wireless n is limited to 450Mbps as opposed to the 600Mbps on the R7000, 5GHz speeds are identical. That is why the R6700 is rated ac1750, not ac1900 like the 7000. Also, there are dd-wrt builds for both if you want to try that.

The Ultimate speed increase has not been completed in all markets yet. You (and everyone else in the thread) can find the speed and data plan info for each teir in your area at https://www.cox.com/content/cox/aboutus/corporate/pages/policies/speeds-and-data-plans.html/ Just make sure you've set your location correctly. Ultimate is planned to increase to 200 Mbps / 20 Mbps in most markets and the above link will likely not be updated for Ultimate until the speed increases are completed.

Thanks Coleen. It's already been increased in Phoenix and Tucson AZ... 300/30 is the new speed for Ultimate here, assuming you have at least a 16-channel modem.
Here is a speedtest from my laptop, which is wireless.

And here is a speedtest from my desktop, which is wired directly to my Netgear R7000 router.

Very nice. I knew the download speed was increased, and in retrospect I knew the upload was increased too, I just forgot it was increased to 30Mbps. I wonder if that will keep increasing as they release more modems with 4+ upstream channels.
