trouble sending e-mail

I'm getting this error message when I try to send e-mail:

"The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: [E-mail title]', Account: 'pop.central.cox.net', Server: 'smtp.central.cox.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

I don't know what's pooched here Cox or my e-mail client.  I'm using the e-mail application that came loaded with Vista.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, are you able to login to your Cox Webmail and send/receive emails OK? Also, you can change the server setting by removing "central" from both the pop server and the smtp server: so, pop.cox.net and smtp.cox.net

Also, do you have an Anti-virus program that is integrated into the email client you are using? You may need to remove it from your email client.

Thank you for your timely reply!  I have tried removing the "central" from the server settings but did not do any good.  I haven't tried from the web mail app, but will do so, and I will check the AV settings then let you know.

Well, it appears as if the webmail app will allow me to send and receive.  I have checked my AV settings for e-mail protection and there are none.

Where are you sending from? Alot of time you get that error if your not sending from a home/Cox network. Work? Friends? Out of country? Just in general.

If you are away, you want to change your outgoing settings to use authentication on outbound with SSL on port 465 or 587. I will wait for specific instructions until I know Im on the right track.

If your sending from a hotel, you either have to use some very specific settings, or use webmail.

1 method is to make sure your outgoing mail server is using authentication (password) and that its the same one as you use for your incoming mail. Also you must check your outgoing port. I would try 465 with SSL but sometimes 587 works better.

2nd method, if the hotel blocks these ports is to ask them for their relay server. A relay server does just that, it takes what ever mail your sending, and relays it directly to the mail server your sending it to. It will be like relay.hotelname.com or something. Then use THAT server with what ever settings they require. Usually no password and normal port 25 with no SSL. The problem with this second method is you have to change it back to send email when you get home. Since their relay server won't work outside the hotel's network.

If you don't mind me asking, what Hotel are you staying at? If its any in Las Vegas, there is a special Cox one you can use. Don't give specifics of course, for privacy reasons.

::Edit:: Thunderbird will usually auto connect with SSL and all the sercure ports, so thats probably what did it. Good thinking.

We are staying at the Branson Vacation Inn & Suites in Branson MO.  Thanks for all the tips; I have booked marked this page just in case I need the info again.

Thanks again.

Yea, they are probably on Comcast. You can know for sure by going to WhatismyIP.com and it will tell you who the ISP is. I don't think the hotel is the type to it's own SMTP relay server, so we can at least rule that out. I can call if you want me to though..I thought I would ask so not to be creepy.

So you have to use specific settings. Here they are laid out on step 4 of their official instructions.

Click More Settings.
The incoming server setting should be 110.

Note: Use the secure setting 995 when not on the Cox network; when using this setting check the box for SSL.
The outgoing server setting should be 465.

Note: Check the box my server requires authentication and the box this server requires a secure connection SSL.

Click OK.

Or see this thread for more info.

Calling wont be necessary but I appreciate the offer.  I'll try the things you suggested and let you know.  Thanks again.

Well the ISP is known as "CenturyLink".  Anyway I followed the instructions you laid out and it worked like a charm!  THANKS!
