TiVo HD and Cox question
I recently found a TiVo HD for $5 at my local thrift store. I'm currently using it with an OTA antenna. I also have Internet with Cox and I'm looking to use a cable card with the TiVo. I saw that the card is $2.99 a month to rent. Could I rent just the cable card and get channels, or do I need to pay for a package? Also, could I access On Demand programming (i.e. SyFy and FXX if I'm subscribed to these channels)?
Oh, and what would everyone's ideal setup be with this current configuration? Unfortunately, I cannot activate the TiVo service to record, but I could still pause and rewind.

Is the Model an actual TiVo HD as pictured?
What is the "TiVo Service Account Status" ?
TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Account & System Info > System Info
If it does not have a 5: Product Lifetime Service or an 11: Evaluation it may be worthless and should not even work.
A TiVo HD (Series 3) that does not currently have a paid subscription service plan can never be reactivated, a recent policy change made by TiVo.
https://support.tivo.com/articles/Essential_Summary/TiVo-Payment-Plans-and-Policies
IMPORTANT: Series1–Series3 DVRs no longer are eligible for new service plans. Once the existing service plan expires, reactivation of these DVRs will not be possible. Series1–Series3 DVRs with Product Lifetime Service will continue to receive service for the life of the DVR.
The only way to get a CableCARD from Cox would be to pay for a TV package, you could get just the StarterTV Pak or the EconomyTV Pak, but you would need at least one of those at a minimum, to use a CableCARD. Do not purchase a CableCARD from eBay they will not work with Cox.
The TiVo HD cannot access Cox OnDemand programming, only a Premiere, Roamio or Bolt, with a paid TiVo Subscription.
Without a paid subscription the TiVo HD can only be used for LiveTV as you stated, without any Guide data.

Bryaninphx is one of our resident TiVo experts, so I trust his information is accurate. On the Cox side of things, you would need to rent a Cox CableCARD and Tuning Adapter (the Tuning Adapter is free) and subscribe to a channel package in order to get service.

Awesome, guys! I really appreciate the help! I was literally at the Cox store talking to the team members about the cable cards the day I found the TiVo. I was extremely excited and I am a highly satisfied customer. I'll probably subscribe to the TV Starter for now. One more question, with a TV Starter subscription, could I access TV shows online with my Cox ID? Thanks.

Oh, and that is the TiVo pictured. I'll take a look at the account status, but I'm not too worried about it.

Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear this. Yes, you will be able to access available online content for channels you're subscribed to with your user ID.
