Tivo and Cox
What do I need to make a Tivo DVR compatible with the new encrypted digital service? Just a cable card? I saw something about a "tuning adapter" for Tivo, is that also required? If I switch to Tivo can I eliminate the cable box on that TV?

Just a CableCARD and a Tuning Adapter, @ $2.00/mo, and yes you do not need to rent a Cox receiver any more. Technically the Tuning Adapter is a receiver, but you are not charged for it.
Cox Digital CableCARD Service & Tuning Adapter Self Install Kits
If you only subscribe to Basic and Expanded (Essential TV) or Economy TV you may not even technically need the Tuning Adapter for the HD channels. Here in Phoenix, Cox has moved all the HD Essential Pak channels off of SDV, thus they no longer require the Tuning Adapter, This may vary depending on the city.
But for any SD channels or any of the Variety, Movie, Sports Paks you will still need the Tuning Adapter. It is probably best to get the Tuning Adapter as Cox could move channels at any time w/o notice.

Bryan answered my question perfectly. Now a follow up: I see the Motorola DCX3400HD/DVR listed on the internet as compatible with Cox. Can I use the Motorola in lieu of Tivo with a cable card?

TVs in your home that are already connected to a Cox HD receiver do not require any changes as a result of the all-digital transition. You will continue to receive all of your channels.
Motorola, Scientific Atlanta, and Cisco cable set-top boxes purchased online are not compatible with Cox.
