The speed test isn't working on my MacBook

I can't get the speed test to ping, I keep getting a latency error.  I also have a Windows computer on my network and it runs the test fine and shows maximum speed.  Any idea what might be the problem?

The Cox Speed Test is compatible with Mac OS X (I've used it at home several times on my iMac), so there may be an issue with your version of Flash. Can you take a screenshot of what happens and post it to this thread (Instructions below)?

To take a screenshot on Mac OS X:

On your keyboard press the Command ( ), Shift, and 3. After a few seconds you will hear a "camera click" sound and the screenshot will be saved as file on the desktop.

To see what version of Flash you are running, and to upgrade if you are using an older version, go to the web site below:

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.  I updated Flash and the speed test worked - kind of.  It did the download test but got stuck on the upload test.  My download speed was 1.34 which is awful.  My Windows laptop is connecting at 15 or 16 consistently.  Here is a screen shot of the speed test.

Well, I never got a Browse button to select the image to insert. All of this started when I got a new modem/router, Netgear Gateway CG300D.  I bought it from Cox so that it would definitely be compatible with Cox service. I was connecting with no problems at max speed prior to setting up the new modem/router. I'm using Snow Leopard on my MacBook. It is an Intel core duo with 4G ram.

This situation is getting really frustrating.  Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks for the info. I did a little digging and it seems that a few people across different ISPs had trouble with their Macs and a new Netgear router. Fortunately the problem seems like it is an easy fix as it is related to some network settings.

  1. On your Mac, go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences. When the window appears select Network.
  2. Click the Lock icon at the bottom and enter the password for your computer.
  3. On this window you will have the network connections listed and the active connection should have a green dot next to it. If you are using wireless select Airport or, if your Macbook is connected by a ethernet cable, select Built-in ethernet.
  4. From there, there will be section towards the bottom labeled DNS Server. If there is anything typed there, remove it. Click the Apply button once that information has been removed.
If you would like a visual reference to the above, use this article from our Knowledge Base: http://ww2.cox.com/residential/arizona/support/internet/article.cox?articleId={7ba29710-6418-11df-ccef-000000000000}

If there was any thing in the DNS section that you had to remove, try the test again. You should be able to receive speeds at the same rate as your other PC on the network. If you do not, and you are connected via Wireless, you can also check the Router settings to see what rate the wifi is set too. While most routers manufactured in the last few years are compatible with the faster rate 802.11n and 802.11g protocols, they can also be set to the slow 802.11a and 800.11b protocols that have much slower data rates of 1 mb and 5mb respectively.

There are 3 numbers in the DNS space but they are grey and I can't click them.  I'm using my Windows laptop to upload a screen shot of my Network and Netgear settings.  I really appreciate your help. When I called in for help I called Netgear who told me to call Cox who told me to call Netgear who told me to call Cox who told me to call Apple.  I knew Apple would tell me to call Netgear so I didn't make the $50 call to them and have been trying to find answers online.  So, thank you for your help.

I don't think posting this photo is putting me in any danger.  Please tell me if I'm wrong and I'll delete it asap.

I edited the post above to remove network name, I hope you're the only one who saw it since the first post was emailed to you. eek

The greyed-out numbers are the DNS addresses automatically provided by Cox. While you can add alternate DNS addresses (e.g., Open DNS) and simultaneously remove those provided by Cox, most people don't need to mess with this. Furthermore, unless you've reconfigured your Windows machine to run off a different DNS, then this is not likely your problem.

Try changing your channel from auto to something specific, like 36.

I can't connect with my MacBook at all today (Sunday).  When I try I get an error message that says 'Connection Timeout'.

Would it be better to return this Netgear Gateway and exchange it for one that will play nicely with my Mac?

Again, I very much appreciate your help.
