Terribly slow internet speeds

I moved a few months ago and had my internet moved to the new address, but a Cox technician has to come and set up the internet because it seemed something wasn't wired right. I've noticed, however, that my speeds drop to about 1-3 Mbps. Videos take forever, and loading websites is just terrible. There doesn't seem to be a particular time it happens, but it gets to be very frustrating. This occurs on both wired and wireless connections, whether or not I'm connected through the router or modem.

I don't recall my internet ever suffering while at the previous place. Is this bad wiring, or is my internet being throttled?

Thanks for any help.

Hi nous2525,

We can look into this for you, we don't want you to deal with slow speeds.  I did have a few questions, do you have any splitters connected coming from the wall outlet?  Sounds like you did the normal troubleshooting steps to narrow things down.  Please email us at cox.help@cox.com, in your email include the name and address on the account.  We'll figure this out.

Thanks DerrickW.

There are no splitters outside the wall outlet. However, we have three cable outlets, but since the Cox technician came, only one of them works now. It is possible that he did something with the splitter inside the wall.

nous2525,

I would like to take a look at the modem signal levels to see if there are any issues there.  Can you email the account information?  I will bring up the modem and see if I notice in issues on our end.

Hey Derrick,

I emailed the the Cox support email address you gave me with the information earlier today. Is there a different address I should send it to as well?

One thing I see right away that stands out is the older DOCSIS 2.0 modem.  In general you'll experience more inconsistent speeds with those due to the lack of channel bonding capability.  There may be benefit to scheduling a technician to come out and troubleshoot further including trying a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to see if there is any improvement.

I understand what you mean about the DOCSIS, but I've been with you guys for a few years now using the same modem/router combo... I'm inclined to think that it's a location thing, unless there was a recent switch over that affected the performance of DOCSIS 2.0.

Would having a technician come out be expensive?

The main change has been that speeds have been increased.  The closer the provisioned speeds are to the maximum capabilities of the modem, the less reliable the speeds become.  Technician visits are $45 based on the most recent information I have.
