SMTP Server fails to connect with iPhone LTE or 3G

My iPhone completely stopped sending email, using Cox smtp server. Receiving email works fine as usual. I've been with Cox for over 15 years. I've had iPhones since the day they came out. About 10 days ago, sending email from the iPhone 5S completely stopped. I called, and was told I needed to change my password. Why? Who knows. So I did that. No good. I deleted the entire email account from the iPhone, set it up again. No good. Nothing had changed on my end. I don't, and haven't needed to adjust settings for email in a few years. But it won't send. And at this point, Cox SMTP will not send through LTE or 3G.

I called again. Explained the situation.

When I am at home, and my iPhone is on the WiFi router, it would send just fine. If I turn off WiFi, or if I am 100 miles away from any WiFi network, and running on LTE or 3G, smtp FAILS. Period. That is the problem. I couldn't make the Cox Tech understand this. All she kept saying was I need to have WiFi on. I always have WiFi on. But I am not always connected to a WiFi network.

When I walk into my house, the iPhone auto connects to WiFi at home. I drive a truck all over this country. I have always been able to send email through Cox smtp on LTE or 3G. Not any more. The tech was obviously lost. No clue what she was talking about.

I am not a computer dummy. I have web sites, and run my own servers. I don't use Windows at all on my PC. I use Linux. My servers have email, services including web mail. My fix........... STOP playing around with unknowledgeable people that call themselves TECH's at Cox and use my own SMTP Service on my server. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Once I get all of my email addresses changed over to my own domain , I'll stop using Cox email all together. To log into web mail, with the iPhone is almost impossible. Safari continues to give me an error, "Too Many Redirects. Destination Unreachable". Cox email, in general, is not worth the hassle. And sadly, email isn't rocket science.

Now, to throw in another unique problem..... My account only lists 1 email account. 6 to 10 months ago, maybe longer..... I had 3 email accounts under my Cox account. 2 were used by my daughter. She has her own server now, so a few months ago, I deleted both of her email accounts from my account. And you know what...... BOTH of those 2 email accounts are still available and working, even though they are not even listed in my account...............anywhere. They do not show up in my Cox account. The passwords for those 2 email accounts can't even be changed. But they work, sending and receiving.

You have some real email issues Cox, and that's probably why you have phishing and hacking problems.

If you're trying to send emails while not connected to the Cox network I suggest removing and re-adding your SMTP settings per this article and see if that helps:

Been there.... done that.

Up until only a few weeks ago, being on 3G or LTE, ......the cox smtp worked fine.

I've had iPhones since they came out. Setting up email on them has been relatively the same. I'm using an iPhone 5s. It's not anything new. But sending email, using Cox SMTP no longer works.

I'm using my own smtp service on my own server. When I'm 500 miles away from my server, I'm not on my network. I'm on my phone companies LTE or 3G. Sends like a charm now.

Been there, done that .........way back when I reported this fiasco. BTW, the forum itself is loading web pages at a rate of about 1 every 3 minutes.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'm fine using my own smtp server. Not going any further re doing the same things I have already done over and over to get the same results.

And the 2 accounts that are not showing in my account...... what is uo with them? They both work, but don't show in my account, and cannot be administrated thru my account.

If you have email accounts that are not appearing when you sign into our page with your primary account that may very well be the root cause for the problem we're troubleshooting here. It sounds like they may have been provisioned on a different billing account that is no longer active. You may wish to email us at cox.help@cox.com with your account info and the email addresses in question so we can investigate further.

I'm having the same issue using Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0.  I am receiving emails but can not connect to smtp.cox.net to send an email unless I am connected to WiFi. Cox chat support replied "we don't support phones". Nice. I scoured the web and have tried everything... verified email settings, updated phone os, deleted/added email accounts, access point changes, app cache cleared, etc., etc., etc. When my phone checks outgoing mail settings, it says "Unable to connect to email server to verify your account information.  No response from server".

My guess is Cox smtp servers are blocking connection from certain IPs. By the way, this is a recent issue for me; I successfully sent an email without being connected to WiFi on 10/13/2016.

We are recently having problems with SMTP on our PC's with Outlook... We can get emails OK but can't send... Does the password reset work?  Recommendations???

Yesterday, I have started experiencing this problem. Have been using my cox email via outlook and my andoid phone for years "off-site" (e.g. not at home on my LAN).

When at work (non-Cox LAN) on Outlook, and anywhere on my iPhone, I cannot send outbound mail. Phone reports failure, outlook repeatedly prompts me for my cox email password (which I supply to no avail).

I have made no configuration changes. This same computer and phone was working Tuesday in these environments.

Something has changed on the cox end.

As with SBFLUX above, I continue to receive email just fine. But, not being able to reply to emails people send to me from my phone when I am on the road is a major, MAJOR PITFA.

Password reset didn't fix anything for me.

Wouldn't expect it to.

This is an SMTP server configuration issue on their end; has nothing to do with our devices.

@Unhappy1 and Michael P Deignan What settings are you using for the outgoing server? (including port #, SSL or TLS)

This is a recurring issue with iOS devices.  Every so often a bunch of devices start throwing SMTP errors after an Apple update.  Sometimes they randomly change settings (password to MD5 on authentication for example), or there are keychain issues (ie username/password corruption).  This isn't always a problem on Cox's end, but it sure might be.  I've seen this issue usually solved in a couple different ways:

  1. Remove/Re-add email account
  2. Verify correct settings (http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=a8fb24c0-6440-11df-ccef-000000000000 use SSL for smtp)
  3. Manually create an additional SMTP entry, use a different name
  4. Heck, you can always send via SMTP through a different server/service provider

It is frustrating, I know - my wife has an iPhone, I have an Android.  Hers has this problem pop up every so often, yet mine as no issues at all.  It's the only reason I believe that it is an Apple caused issue, as SMTP is a mature standard with no changes to its core interface.

I almost forgot,

It is common for an ISP to have non-ssl enabled for clients inside their network, but require secure authentication outside.

Proper SMTP settings for universal access:

Server: smtp.cox.net

Port: 465

Encryption: SSL

Authentication: Password

Username: your email address without the @cox.net

Password: same password you use to log in to webmail.cox.net to check that email account

I've also encountered Verizon blocking port 25 (standard smtp) and ATT got caught with some hinkiness on pop/smtp access through their network as well.  They were re-writting headers to bypass encryption.  Check if you can send smtp through other services (gmail/yahoo or your own SMTP servers that you are mentioning).

I do advocate having your own domain and sending emails there - it's what I do.  I have maintained the same email address for over 10 years - I do have it forwarded to gmail - but the portability of having it forwarded where-ever I'd like, and the ability to use a catch-all email address so I can figure out who is selling email addresses by using unique-to-a-site email addresses so they show up when sold to spammers helps.

These are the settings I currently use in Outlook, which have been working for several years (only significant change was moving from POP3 to IMAP in Outlook probably... I dunno, 5 years ago).

Over the past few days I've tried different variables of port 465/587 SSL/TLS, as well as using "smtp.east.cox.net" to no avail when off-site. My settings on my Android phone mimic these settings. It cannot send mail either.

Basically, email is no longer usable on either my laptop or my phone when not at home. I can receive, but not reply, to any email through my phone or laptop when I am not at home... which is a major, major PITFA, as I have had this email address for over a decade and it is pretty much linked to everything in my existence (so is not something I can easily "change" to an address@nsa.gmail.com.

Settings

I am repeatedly asked for my password when I am outside my home network.
