Slow wifi speeds with modem/router combo from Cox

I'm having the same problem as this guy:

I'm paying for 50 Mbps service and I'm getting 3 Mbps over WiFi with this Netgear N450. I've called tech support and they can't figure it out. I get the 50 Mbps when wired to the unit. I think this is just a POS router that cox is selling so that they can throttle unknowing customers.

Prove me wrong cox.

Basically, yes. I don't think it is to throttle customers, because throttle without control is useless. It would be like trying to control traffic on the road by randomly slowing some cars down. It won't help, and will make it a lot worst. Also, the fact that your wires is OK states this too. If Cox was throttling, they wouldn't just effect wireless.

But overall, Cox sells cheap gateways because that is the only gateways being made. Gateways are for those that don't know better and just want something cheap that will work.

Last, wireless performance will have just as much, if not more, to do with the environment the Wifi is in, then the hardware. What your house is physically is made of, other networks around you, interference from things around you (cellular networks, CB, Ham, etc) and what devices your connecting.

I'll agree with Teck on his points - most gateways are **, you'll want a separate modem and dedicated wireless router to get the full speed over wifi. I have Ultimate (300 Mbps) and my wifi speeds will usually test anywhere from 150-200 Mbps, depending on which device does the speed test.

I don't have many other networks in my area. I scanned the channels and no one was on 11. I bought a Motorola surfboard 6141 modem and a tp link Archer C7 router.

As far as throttling, I was getting decent speeds a few months ago. After searching around, I found out that we are actually on data plans. I have the 50 Mbps service and that comes with 350 GB. There is a meter that they have that will show you how much you have used for this month and the month prior. I used 339 of 350 last month. I've probably gone over before. What would be the purpose of these plans and tracking usage?

As for the speed problem you've described I'd suggest starting with the basics.  Can you duplicate the problem with a wired connection?

How is that working out for you? The part I like about having separate units is it allows better isolation of ISP issues and networking issues. 

The C7 is a decent router. Should suit you fine. Here is a review on it.  Looks like a possible issue with interference when among strong 5Ghz networks. Looks like two power amps built in, so range should be good. If throughput is low, look into disabling up/download bandwidth limiting. Sometimes those systems can have issues in a power-boost environment.

I just ordered them on amazon, they should be here in a few days. I'll update this thread on the results. We cut the cable cord a few years ago and just stream Netflix and amazon prime. Hopefully this setup can handle 2 or 3 streams at a time.

The Netgear N450 that cox sells is not good at all. There are people all over the web having the same issue.

Results are in. It's the Netgear N450 that was the problem. I'm getting WiFi speeds between 40-57 Mbps with tests from multiple sites.
