Slow Speed sticky?

I see a lot of threads of people reporting slow speeds, but then go on to give no, or very little, technical details of the issue. I think part of it is some people just don't know what a forum is. They treat it more like Facebook, talking about how they feel, and less about the issues. So I have put together some common questions:

1. What is the general problem? Slow speed tests? Slow streaming? Slow downloading? Intermittent connectivity? Try to describe the problem as if you were to a blind person, because we can't see anything you can.

2. What equipment do you have? What model modem or gateway? Do you also have a router?

3. How do you have it configured? Router in AP mode? Gateway in bridge mode? Using IPv6? Wireless radio? Security type?

4. Show me the data! Speed test results, signal levels (192.168.100.1 unless a gateway), ping tests and tracert (if relevant). Also, if you post logs, be sure to edit out any MAC addresses or other personal info.

5. What plan/tier do have? Will say so on your bill.

6. Troubleshooting steps you have tried so far.

7. Outline of any visits from a Cox Technician. What did they do? What did they say?

If anyone else has anything to add, feel free to reply.

+1 for sticky thread(s).  I suggested a sticky for "how do you change you WiFi password?" a year ago and it went nowhere.  Never even a response from the mods.  Maybe we could have a FAQ sticky in each forum where we can post common answers / suggestions.  Like in the TV forum: FAQ about the minibox, how many threads are there asking the same questions?

Good suggestion, Teck and I think you have everything covered in your questions.

Even if it is not turned into a sticky, could the moderators just not lock it ever? That way we can link to it and I can edit it to add any additional question we find are useful.

You would have to annotate your sticky with a glossary of terms, instructions on how to find the requested data, along with instructions on how to post it.

Then you would need a sticky to tell everyone to read your other sticky. Because it's painfully obvious that people don't bother to read the stickies. Or the guidelines, the TOS, and in some hilarious cases, even their bill.

Now, if your proposed sticky appeared when one clicked on "Ask a TV/Internet Question", that could prove useful.

I posit that the vast majority of folks that come here for help would need help providing the data. And that folks who already possess the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain the data don't come here looking for help.

Perhaps an overgeneralization but I suspect that for a lot, if not most, of the OP's here, 10 years ago, the clock was flashing "12:00" on their VCR's.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I see your point, but it sounds more like you are against stickies in general, not so much against my idea for one. Granted, most wouldn't read it before asking a question, and some wouldn't understand everything asked, but it would atleast be SOMETHING. Trying and failing is better then not trying at all. Not only might it help people frame their OP, but it would be something we could link to or even just copy/paste into the new thread.

Also, was there anything specific that you think could use re-defining? I tried to keep it simple, but too much simplicity leads to inaccuracy.

I agree, however that is not within the abilities of the forum as is designed now. A sticky is. We have to work with what we have.

Probably, but I don't mind helping people understand the questions, or find the data. I would have to do that anyway, even without the sticky.

You notice the mods have been absent from this thread.  Seams like any suggestions for making this board more efficient are ignored.  I never received a mod's response to this thread I created in Nov 2014, only responses were from you and Domino.

You called it. I guess I just won't try so hard to help people who don't really want help from other users. I guess this forum's audience must be fundamentally less technical then the others I am a part of. Maybe this thread will help 1 or 2 people at-least so I will keep it up.

At some point the Law of Diminishing Returns kicks in. You, sir, on any given day, far exceed the point at which most people would simply throw their hands up in exasperation. Remarkable, really.
