Slow internet speeds.

I have been receiving slow internet speeds at 8PM through the time I go to bed. Any other time I get my advertised speeds or at least within the ball park. This is becoming a normal occurrence and a nuisance. Over the month I have contacted cox a number of times and all they tell me is " we can send a tech out to your home to inspect the lines and equipment." There is nothing wrong with my lines or equipment. I have had a off the clock cox tech check the lines and equipment; but am unable to get him to check it at the times I have issues. I have also contacted tier two support a number of times they too only wish send a tech out to check the lines. Seeing as the issue fixes itself after peak hours I'm led to believe that cox is just playing with me, trying to get money for something that isn't needed. All I would like is someone to give me an honest answer and admit it is on cox's end and too stop trying to drain money out of a poor college student. 1/21/2014 8PM to present time 9:10PM the issue persists.

Im confused. How many users here have service in OK?

The first thing to check with any service issue is the signal levels. You can get them off the modem's 192.168.100.1 webpage, but that depends slightly on your modem. For specifics please post your model number.

If you have some data that the issue is on Cox's end (tracert, ping, etc) please post that. Otherwise it's important to first isolate where the bottleneck is so to better troubleshoot the issue. It's hard to do if everyone's issue is slightly different, so it might be better in that case to post a seperate thread.

I had a local tech check my node, cables, and equipment. He said everything is perfect on my end. I asked him if there is an issue with cox's backbone at peak hours and he said he is not allowed to comment on this. I pay $73.99 a month for my internet service and would understand fluctuation during peak hours but a 50mbps connection slowing to speeds as low as 8mbps is an outrage.

Shoot, thats right, OP was a different issue. ::Ping:: Moderator - Could you move  richard1980  to a new thread?

" He said everything is perfect on my end"

Well that makes things easier. Did he mention what he thought the problem was? Lets look at the facts, could you post your signal levels? You can find them at 192.168.100.1. Also, how are you running the speed tests? Which sites?

Currently my connection is as it should be with normal fluctuation as it is not peak hours. I will post another image of my connection details later tonight at peak hours. I use three sites to get accurate results 1) Testmy.net 2) Speedtest.net 3) Cox speed test. I did ask what he thought the problem was. He told me "With what I am seeing you should not have any issues with your connection speeds." Which led me to ask if it is an issue with cox's backbone at peak hours. He told me "I am not allowed to comment on this." I did not press the issue.

Thought I might share some more connection details since my speeds are lower than ever.

What tier do you have? I ask because it looks like your configuration file is set to 16000Kbps and is the config for a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, but I might be misreading it. It might be a configuration/provisioning issue and your seeing natural speed-boost fluctuation.

Could a moderator comment?

I have Cox Premier with DOCSIS 3.0 if it were configured as DOCSIS 2.0 I would never see my advertised speeds. Which I do see with the exception of peak times which seem to be 8PM through 11PM. Which is why I provided a speed test from right before peak times and two during peak times. 161001_vm2.0_d.cfg is the up to date configuration for my modem developed in collaboration between Netgear and Cox. Also I don't believe you fully understand my issue. Seeing as you commented on normal speed boost fluctuation. Please read all information provided.

Edit: 11PM (after peak time) Modem has not been reset nor has any troubleshooting been done. This is to further document that it is not an issue on my end.

Hi Boogieman454,

This definitely sounds like it deserves a second look.  Intermittent issues are the hardest to troubleshoot, there are some things we can check though to try to get to the bottom of this issue.  Can you please email us at cox.help@cox.com with the account information (name & address)?  Thanks!

FYI I send a firmware update to the gateway, let me know if that changes anything.

I will report back again tonight during peak hours to see if the firmware Chris updated had any effect. But, I honestly think it's due to the backbone running through my little podunk town. Just to give you an idea of my location. I live in a fairly remote area outside of town there is only one other customer on my node and there are a total of two technicians who do installations and repairs for the entire town.

Still have slow downstream speeds during peak hours. Cox is still trying to tell me it has nothing to do with their backbone.

I'm having a similar problem here in phoenix, when i'm connected to the cox network my speed shows 65 megs, but when i'm not on cox network I get 1 to 9 megs. I use cox speedtest to check since it saves the last 25 test results. My biggest problem is the test tells me if i'm on the cox network. I pay cox money for internet service.... how can I not be on there network??? And If i'm now on cox, what network am I on?

wireless connection.

All of my devices are wired.  So I hooked computer straight to modem, checked speed 66megs. Waited, played flash game,

read article. Logged in to check speed again, I see this:

Phoenix

Change Market

Your current Internet connection is not on the Cox network.

Hit speed check.... A whopping 6.19megs down and  3.45 up.

Services: Cox High-Speed Internet - Premier Package

Any of you cox people have an answer for this?

Interesting. Could be a couple things going on. Using what ever computer you tested from originally, go to whatismyip.com  Does it show Cox as your ISP? If not, who does it show?

Also, are you running any VPN or work from home type connections?
