Slow internet speeds

I have recently upgraded my internet to the preferred package.  I have also upgraded my cable modem to a new motorola surfboard, my wireless router is a cisco that is rated at 50 mbps.  Since the uprgade I can only get around 1 mbps download speeds while my upload speeds are around 5 mbps.  Something is not right since they just upgraded in my neighborhood last week.  What can be done to fix this?  On a side note I did have 1 day where I had download speeds around 7 mbps but most of the time it is around 1.  That makes it almost impossible to watch something on netflix let alone have someone surfing the internet at the same time.  Thanks in advance!

Have you tried bypassing the router and going direct to the modem?

Also, what are the signal levels of the modem? You can find them on 192.168.100.1

Last, what are you using to test your speed?

When I first upgraded the modem I did and had the same results of under 1 mbps.  Then I had connectivity issues with the router and the cox rep I was speaking with on the phone suggested I needed to have someone come out to diagnose the problem.  After declining to pay the over the phone service I was able to restore the internet connection with a few computer, router, and modem reboots.  I am not sure how to check the signal levels on the modem.  Those numbers don't mean anything to me sorry.  I have used the cox speed check and compared the results with speedtest.net.  The thing I dont understand is that before the upgrade to the preferred package I was not getting the advertised speeds.  Thanks again.

Sorry, I helped best I could. If those things mean nothing to you then there isn't much more I can do.

Do you have a friend or family member who knows about computers who can perhaps help you? Even if its just helping you provide the forum with that information.

Ha.  Unfortunately I am the most computer literate person.  Is the info in the connection settings on the computer or on the program that came with the wireless router?

My up went from 28Mbps to 11.89Mbps....so they doubled the down and screwed us on the up.....I want the old speed back and don't give me the direct to modem line, I get the same results either way and better results with my comp thats 75 ft away and with the other thats right next to the modem, either going thru the netgear 1.2G router or direct to the modem....either using ookla or cox ookla....And your techs try and lie about the up speed I had...it needs to be fixed, or I'll just cut it off and go somewhere else....

@bbudnick

Everything appears to be in order when I look from this end.  I'd suggest trying some testing without the router and see what your baseline speeds look like before adding it back.

Well when I plug the ethernet cable directly into the computer from the cable modem it tells me there is a connection but no internet access is available.  When I plug it back into the router....well here I am.

When you move the ethernet cord, make sure you unplug the power to the modem, wait 20 seconds, and then plug it back in.
