Slow internet, DNS issue, not pref. speed

Upgraded last month to preferred internet, brand new Cisci DPC3825 mode/wi-fi.   It worked fine for about 3 weeks.   However, for the past week, I've been seeing constant DNS issues (resolving host message), and slow speeds, yet when I run speed test using the Cox support page, the speed is fine (for non-preferred, coming in at 25-29 Mb/s).    Same goes for speedtest.net.

So, 2 issues - 1, the DNS issue, I removed the usual DNS servers, and went with 68.105.28.13 and 29.13, as suggested in another forum post.   This does not appear to have resolved the issue, still "resolving host", even for common web sites.

Second issue, slow response.   This could be related to having problems resolving the address, but until I resolved the DNS issue, I won't be sure.

When I went to my cox account, it said my internet device was DCI382P.  Not sure if that lines up with my modem, which is a Cisco DPC3825.

 Any suggestions?    TIA.

Hello noladave,

Are you having trouble bringing up specific websites or are you getting DNS error no matter what site you go to?  Could be just the generic error you get when you lose internet connection.  Are you using a wireless connection or are you plugged in with an ethernet cable to the router?  I can take a look at the account to ensure it has been provisioned properly.  E-mail me at cox.help@cox.com, include the name and address listed on the account.  Thanks!

Cox service is sure slowed down and disconnects reqularly.  Connection to Cox on line has been really bad.  Yahoo acts like they get lost in the DNS servers.

Did you seriously just copy and paste the same post into 4 threads? You do know this is a national forum right? The possibility of your problem being related to others, unless the location and symptoms are similar, is very small. Please start your own thread.

Hi Finn,

I've addressed your post on the thread found HERE.

Switching DNS servers has solved the problem.    I had to reboot, for it to help, even though I tried Ipconfig /flushdns command, prior to the reboot.     I've been ok for 2 days now.

Do I have to keep this DNS setup permanently, or is/was this a temporary issue?

Try Namebench by Google. It will scan different DNS in your area and not only tell you the best one, but tell you why some might be having problems.

I jinxed myself, the problem is back.   Download speeds are about 2mb/s.   This is not good.   If I get some time, I will contact support, i was just hoping that someone around here knew something.

I'm still seeing indications of a possible upstream noise problem from this end.  I'd say it's definitely time to have somebody out and take a look.

DNS problems are back, but very intermittent.   Just documenting, so when I open a case, I have things all in one place.   Today speed is still an issue (2 to 4 mb/s most of the day), and then DNS definitely a big issue today.   I tried using NSLOOKUP, and got errors with unresponsive servers:

C:\Documents and Settings\Dave>nslookup
