"Shipping Summary: 1 Trio Filter"

I live in Wichita KS, have been a Cox customer for over 20 continuous years, briefly worked phone support for Roadrunner-***-Cox High Speed Internet back in A.D. 2000 (cuz I know PCs, not so much networking)...

To begin this long, strange trip: I get this email from Cox in October of 2015 advertising a new 24 download stream-16 upstream cable modem to replace my current 8dx4u bottleneck modem, available for purchase from Cox for $149.99. Great! I want one!

Click the link, it takes me to a page that asks me to login to my Cox account (fine) and then allows me to add the modem to my cart (squee!). I enter all the pertinent stuff and success! "Expect a confirmation email..." Hallelujah!

2 weeks go by with no confirmation email. I call Cox: They have never even heard of a Motorola-Arris modem, with the exception of ancient Arris models that were removed from system years ago. Everything is Cisco now, they tell me. I visit local Cox Solutions Store, stand in line for awhile... They have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, have never even heard of this modem. They tell me that "gigabit internet" is due to be rolled out in limited areas of Wichita beginning in January '16, with the hushed tones of Hillary Clinton divulging state secrets as she adjusts her makeup in the ladies' loo at the Met. That rollout will include new modems for Ultimate subscribers -- including moi -- capable of 16-down x 8-up...but they've got no clue whatsoever about a Motorol-Arris 24d x 16u modem...

I login to my email on my Surface Pro 3 and show them the actual email. I show them the included picture of the actual Motorola-Arris modem on offer... They say, "Hey, try to actually order one. It'll probably fail or tell you that the install date is in January." I do so, in their presence. Click the link, sign in, add to cart, and Qapla'! Says it'll send me a confirmation email. This time, it does. Email says 'thanks for ordering self-install kit', says nothing about a modem. Cox Solutions personnel are gob-smacked. I've accomplished all I can, and leave the store...

Yesterday, I get a FedEx envelope with a little card telling me how to install the included "Trio Filter" onto my new?/old? modem if I'm attaching a phone, another figure for attaching internet, no figures showing how to attach both phone and internet. I have no idea what this "Trio Filter" is, and neither does the entire Internet. I know, I looked, using every search engine and concantenation of the keywords 'Cox', 'cable', 'Trio' and 'Filter'. All I get is ads/reviews for the Renovo Trio water filter. I logon to Cox.com and search site for "Trio Filter": "No results".

I come specifically to the forums and search Trio. No mention of the mysterious/cryptozoological Trio Filter, just 6 hits for Trio being the former name of Contour, like, 3 years ago...

So, my question is this:
Should I place this filter between my cable modem and the ingress coax as directed...or is this some kind of black hole, automatic-mailing glitch?

TIA for any actual intel on this matter,
zooid

Do you have a model number for that 24/16 modem?  On the Cox approved list they show an Arris TG2472 which is a 24/8 gateway and phone modem.  Cox also shows an Arris SB6190, a 32/8 modem.  I don't see anything with 16 upstream channels.  You can purchase the SB6190 for the $149.99 from either newegg or amazon.

Using only one search engine, Google (you should check it out, it's pretty effective at finding things online), and only one concatenation (actual spelling), "trio filter" (just lucky I guess), I stumbled upon these, none of which are related in any way to what you have in hand, but are indeed known by the name Trio Filter (to my surprise not a mammal, bird, fish, reptile, amphibian or insect among them), and easily discoverable.

At least until January 20, 2017. I read on Drudge that Hillary is going to close the pipes that bring the interwebs to the red states. Confirmed by Infowars and WorldNetDaily. So it must be true.

No modem has 16 upstream channels. Not even the D3.1 models which haven't hit the market. The highest is the SB6190 with 32x8 channels. As for why it's Arris/Motorola, Arris bought Motorola CPE branch. Just like Belkin bought Linksys.

As for the filter, it's probably just a MoCA filter incase your DVR running Trio (a UI) uses it. If you don't use MoCA or Whole Home DVR, then you don't need the filter. If you want more what model filter is it? Also what model, or what picture, did you see for the gateway?

Thanks, everyone, for responding. This is the link from the original email, which shows the modem, etc.:

http://www.cox.com/residential/special-offers/ultimate-modem-upgrade.cox?sc_id=cr_em_z_hsi_usi2_15t3&rmid=20151021_Ultimate_Speed_Incr_V200_CenVA_V300_OMA&rrid=3067100245&custid=580026619403&guid=537c9fe0-d968-11e4-b383-14feb5d9513a

It is an Arris Touchstone TG2472:
"Model TG2472:  24x8 Telephony Gateway with Dual Band Concurrent Wireless and integrated MoCA"; e.g., a cable modem w/ wireless router built-in... Identifying it as a 24x16 was my bad (duh!); I was also pretty sure it had spinners and curb feelers, too, but never mentioned those additional enhancements...

The data sheet is here:
https://www.arris.com/globalassets/resources/data-sheets/tg2472_ds.pdf

The User Guide can be found here:
http://www.cogeco.ca/web/resources/pdf/support/user_guides/internet/touchstone_TG2472_Telephony_Gateway_User_Guide.pdf

For the respondent who asked whether this question would be better lodged in the internet forum:
I only posted this here because, of the 6 hits for search term 'Trio', 5 were in the TV forum. Further, as regards the "Trio Filter" it has almost certainly something to do with 'MoCA' (whatever the heck that is), yes? Further, the data sheet would seem to suggest that the modem is in fact integral to the Contour TV delivery system, in addition to internet and telephone provisioning...

Thanks again. Keep those cards and letters coming.

P.S.
So, umm, should I plug in the little inline filter now? ...or wait until Cox provide me with the TG2472 that no Cox tech or help staffer has ever heard of? The labeling on the 'Trio Filter' identifies it thus:
"Antronix GLF-1002
Reject band 1125-2005Mhz
Pass band    5-1002Mhz"

...with a further oval sticker printed thus:
"1 5 0 7
15G"

All of which is meaning-opaque to me...

Thanks, Jer... (shakes head)

I didn't say I got no results on the Intardwebs. I said I got gobbidge, instead of any useful information on the pass-through filter I was holding in my hand.

Where I got "No results" was in the entirety of cox.net on the search term: "Trio Filter", the line item in my shipping confirmation email from Cox...

But, thanks for the trip to the more inconsequential corners of the Web.

v/r,
zooid

P.S.
What's this Google thing you referred to? It sounds really useful. Maybe somebody should make a movie about it, to help us under-the-rock dwellers discover it? I'd nominate Vince Vaughan and whichever Wilson brother was currently on work-release from Betty Ford to co-star in the flicker...

@ AllenP:

Actually, I shortened and condensed the chain of events pretty significantly in order to avoid making a very long original post into a novella... call it artistic license.

After 3rd week of October, I gave up the notion of obtaining an actual TG2472 from Cox as a hoax of Bigfootian proportions.

Instead, on or about 10 December, I purchased a Motorola-Arris SURFboard SB6183, 16x8, 686Mbps download and 131Mbps upload off the shelf at Walmart for $99.99 + tax. I connected it to the same piece of cable as my current Cox-provided 8x4 'bottleneck' modem and called tech support for provisioning. The operator could not 'see' the box, even though my web browser -- aimed at www.dallascowboys.com (because I'm a masochist) -- took me directly to Cox's activation page. I was getting something via the network; but Shaniqua (sp?) was not showing a connected modem. I even asked her if -- because we had telephony running through the old modem, but the new one had no telephone capability -- this might be the problem.

She assured me it was not and assigned not one but two tech visits for Saturday the 12th: One for the new TG2472 modem to be installed (wait...what? Ooh, yes, please!) and another to have my primary 'host' DVR to be replaced; my old one had a serial number that was on hardware recall... I returned the SB6183 for a refund and shivered in antici...pation of getting the Loch Ness TG2472...

Long story short: Only one tech showed up. He'd never heard of the TG2472 and after consulting with his scheduler (who also had never heard of the TG2472) cancelled that work order. He pulled my old DVR (with all 5 seasons of GoT, btw) and replaced it with a shiny brand new one, which now experiences random freezes and reboots...

Aah, Contour! How did we ever live without you?

P.S.
Mebbe the Trio Filter will fix the freeze/reboot problem? I wouldn't know. The envelope only had the filter, a shipping invoice ("POE filter") and a little picture card showing how to install the filter...not whether I should immediately install the filter (or wait for the Leprechaun TG2472 and then install) and if so, why. That's what I've been trying to find out...

zooid,

The TG2472 are modems that were being offered for the Ultimate speed increase. In order to benefit from the faster speeds at no additional cost, you have to have a minimum of 16x4 D3 modem. It seems there are some account details we need to discuss before continuing in the forums. Please email me at cox.help@cox.com with the account details, a link to this thread, and the best number to reach you.

Ahh, ok, so not Arris-Motorola, but just plain Arris. That model is for people who have telephone and internet, other wise you have to pay a month fee. It is NOT for sale as far as I know. Maybe that is why people at Cox didn't know about it, but they should have, it's is on their list of modems.  Problem with that is it is a gateway, so won't work if you have your own router.

zooid said:
certainly something to do with 'MoCA'

FYI: "Antronix point-of-entry (POE) filters ensure MoCA signals do not cause interference in adjacent homes, " See more info here.  Do you have Whole Home DVR or Contour DVR's, or Tivo/Dish with Whole Home DVR? If not, your not using MoCA. MoCA is networking via coaxial wiring. Also, all the new modems and gateways have built in Moca filters, so it likly pointless.

The fact that so many at Cox "never heard" of these things really depressed me. Does Cox not have Google?
